Default Do you use a speed shift kit, or just hit it?

I know that you can buy a speed shifter kit, but I have also heard of others just hitting the kill for the time you shift, or ignoring it all together and just hitting it. I put this in racing, as i know someone here does one of the three. i do not want to get a speed shift kit, but I do want to take it down to Qualcom Stadium for some amateur racing for the hell of it and not profit. Will I damage my bike to upshift on the fly. I would never down, of course, without the clutch.
