Sarge might wanna check the list of Slugs and numbers while he's over there.

DP's list indicates that BS#109 is dead.

No......that's because although he qualified for, and got his number.....he
didn't immerse himself in the "culture".

Hey Steve:

Is that compass needle idea only valid for DC, or would that work for
following house wiring in a wall?

When I was a kid I fooled around making electro magnets by wrapping a
wire around a nail and running DC current from a battery through the
wire. Does AC work the same way with respect to electro magnetism?

What do you think? Setting up a dc current through a coil establishes
poles on the coil. With ac the magnetic fields would build and collapse
at the frequency of the ac. Simplifying it somewhat, because the
constant building and collapsing of the fields would oppose current flow
through the coil.

Remember, inductors are made to pass dc and block ac.

Simple answer is no. With AC current the needle if it did anything, it
might vibrate a little. The magnetic field would be reversing every 1/60 of
a second (1/50 of a second in England). and the field would also be weaker
because less current will flow, due to the inductive reactance of the coil.

Um......

Sure hope your circuit break at home isn't tripping on and off.......

Doesn't seem to.....

Holding the compass over a live DC circuit wouldn't have the needle doing much
either........except maybe pointing north.

The current flowing through the circuit isn't what makes the needle swing, it's
when the field collapses cause the circuit breaker kicked out.......and then
when the field builds when the circuit breaker kicks back in.

I had a 20 amp breaker that the paint sprayer kept tripping. I
replaced the breaker and it's all good. The breaker no longer trips
and the painting is done.

Right. It's the collapsing field that generates the magnetism.
That's why I wondered of the 60-cycle AV would have the same effect.
It's doesn't seem to.

I have a cheap little tool for isolating circuits. It included a
sender that goes in the outlet and a wand hooked to a meter that you
run over the breaker leads. It's not sensitive enough to find a wire
in the wall. The tools that can do that run about $800. I wax
looking for a smart way of finding the wire route without ripping
walls open.

I bought a laser level at an action the other day. Craftsman I believe. It
also had a stud finder laser level with it. It has a setting to find wires
in the wall. Haven't used it except to play with it in the shop. Seemed to
work OK on the wires and it's a stud finding SOB. Kind of nice, finds the
edge of the stud and if you hold it level the laser gives you a mark.

I'm betting it would give you a nice line on the flood to check alignment on
the bike. Just though of that, have to give it a try..
