Harley Davidson Road Tech aka Garmin Quest tip
If anyone has the Harley Davidson "Road Tech" GPS aka Garmin Quest GPS,
and the battery life isn't what it used to be, I have located a source
for a replacement lithium ion battery.
If you don't have a Quest, feel free to disregard the rest of the
message and bellyup to the bar for taste of your favorite.
Garmin wants about $100 or so to replace the battery.
Go to http://www.batteryship.com/
Scroll down the page a bit and on the left hand side of the screen and
click on "GPS Batteries". This will bring you a page of "pull down"
menus and you will see one for Garmin. Just click on the pull down and
find "Quest" or "Quest2" (same battery). Price is but $25.
Installation can be a bit tricky. There are six small phillips head
screws holding the back on and they can be kind of difficult to remove
for the first time. Be careful when removing the rear case as a plastic
endcap holds the flip up antenna in place. If the endcap comes loose, a
spring that puts tension on the antenna will pop out and is guaranteed
to fly to the most inaccessible point within a 50ft radius of where you
were when you removed it. The stock battery is glued in place, but with
careful prying is easily removed. The battery is connected with a small
white polarized plug, so all you need do is plug the new battery in,
reverse the process with the case and you are back in business for a
fraction of what Garmin wants to do the same thing.
One tip I might suggest is when re-installing the back cover, tighten
the phillips head screws down gradually, crossing sides of the GPS.
There is a rubber seal between the unit's case that keeps water out to a
certain degree, but also puts tension on the small screws. Criss Cross
between sides ( sort of like you do lugnuts on a car). This will give
you your best seal against wet weather. Also, if you don't get the case
back together as tight as it should, some of the contacts between the
front and back case will not get together and the unit may not work
Note- I have no connection with "batteryship" other than being a
satisfied customer. Wyoming to Virginia in 2 days with my purchase.
