Well the city has ordinances that state every thing must be in good
repair....
http://www.ci.south-milwaukee.wi.us/mc-ch21.htm#21.302 wow
they have a lot of codes describing everything... and is it states in good
repair. They have a guy drive around and give notice to residents to make
repair or get fined. 3 of his neighbors got these letters to fix one thing
or another. they can even cite you for peeling paint. Read the letter
myself. there were 2 layers of shingles on the roof no tar paper on the
bottom layer. We are thinking they did not have such a thing back then.
the bottom layer was of an interesting type it was the length of the garage
22 feet and had a cut pattern on the bottom of it and had about 16 inches
exposed and was all faced nails with no tar. and the edges of the garage
was nailed every 2 inches and the cap the same on both sides of the peak.
of course it was a 9 - 12 pitch roof. $40 permit and the roof on the house
was just as bad bet they will hit him in a month to get that one fixed and
charge him another permit fee.
for my mom it was good entertainment for her a cross between this old house
and my three sons because her 3 boys worked together all day Saturday to get
it done. She was amazed that I was able to stay on the roof with what I
used. of course when my mom showed up she had to take pictures of it all
and my brother wanted to get one of my dad's hard hats for me(the
professional carpenter) and he had a Navy hat on and then John(the
professional fireman) could get his fireman hat out of his truck and we
would be one short of the village people group.
So one of my highlights of the trip... I took my bike for a ride downtown to
check out the sites for the 105th in august. wow what a mess not even
thinking about summerfest and the fireworks getting out at 11pm and me right
in the middle of it...but still fun to be out on the bike. I did get to
ride on the road that I have been wanting to for a long time but when I went
on them I was sorely disappointed because the road was in great disrepair
there was a reverse speed bump every 15 feet.... it was the oak creek park
way... I remember riding my bicycle thru there loving that and could not
wait to take my bike through there.... and half way through it one of the
bridges collapsed and the closed it down at that point too...
the ride home made up for it all, took off Saturday around noon and headed
straight west through Madison on to some great roads west of there on to
Prairie Du Chien... come over a hit and saw about 15 hugh wind mills moving
ever so peaceful all in unison... pretty cool looking snapped a picture
while riding. but I think the best road was x16 heading north off of
highway 18 in Wisconsin to meet up with a couple of friends at a HD
dealership because one was looking for a new bike. The only problem there
was I looked up the location on HD webpage and they had it on the north side
of town (Waukon) and it just so happens to be on the south side of town and
I went right past it and road another 15 miles north before I knew something
was wrong. Turned around found it and met then just as they were getting
ready to leave. I just followed them the rest of the day back to Cedar
Falls and then on to cedar rapids. Saw some of the results of the flooding.
That is a complete mess. to get to Milwaukee 250 miles there and only 460
miles on the way back.
So if you made it this far... have a frosty one on me while the credit card
is still good.
