| | | Hey Tom G -- great highway!! For Tom specifically, but also for anybody else looking for a fine two
laner.
I'm in New Mexico for a few days and Ms. Mouse and I were headed from
Los Alamos (motto: Can't You Just Smell the Smart?) to Albuquerque and
we stumbled across New Mexico Rt. 4 through the Jemez Mountains.
Holy crap, what a great, beautiful highway! Sinuous twisties, huge
changes in elevation, and scenery that's simply unbelievable.
Breathtaking buttes, arroyos, mesas, just staggeringly beautiful stuff.
If I can I'll post some pics across the street.

Did you go down to the cliff dwellings?

Didn't know they were there. Spent a good bit of the day in Los Alamos,
coming away with very mixed feelings about the place. Had a great time
in Chimayo; bought a bunch of woven things, then looped to Los Alamos
and then back down to Albuquerque. I think tomorrow we're headed south
out into the desert. I love the desert. Ms. Mouse, on the other hand,
prefers galleries. We'll do some of that here, too. Won't go to Santa
Fe, though. Too slick, too glib, too professionally hip and ahtsie for us.
Been looking kind of casually for some potters who aren't doing Pueblo
pots. Found some, but haven't made any connections with them yet. Hope
to do that this week end.
Did meet a guy named Dennis in a Kinko's getting some flash enlarged so
he could tattoo it on his friend. The Kinko kid didn't fully understand
what Dennis was asking and brought back an image the size of a throw
rug. I cracked up and suggested that Dennis' friend would have to do
some growing into that one.

Yep, I did, thanks.
My pc died and I've got a gnu MacBook and I'm having some challenges
getting to send out e-mails at the moment. I can receive, I can send
(obviously) messages to newsgroups, but no send e-mails. Gotta fix that
when I get home.

I just got a new Macbook also. It sure is a different world. What
are you using for a newsreader? I downloaded some freeware, but I
forget the name of it. I am upstairs on the Dell right now. Spent
the afternoon helping a friend demolish a 10 inch thick 600 sq ft
concrete patio and my ass is grass. So are all the other asses that
were there helping. Fucking jackhammer. Fucking rocks. Fucking
steep terrain. Fucking dumpster. Fuck. I can't even lift a Macbook.

I'm using Thunderbird for a mailer/newsreader and Firefox for a web
browser. I've been using them for some time and I'm comfortable with
them. Are they the best thing since sliced bread? Probably not, but
they do what they do just fine for my uses.

When we get back home, I've got to get back into the gym. I can't do
shit without getting totally gassed. Fuck that.
We were out on Rt. 60 today goofing around and stumbled across a
National Parkish sort of thing with some sixteenth century ruins. We
went into the ranger station to talk to the ranger about where to walk
and not walk and he was a kid about twenty-not-much. With a brand new
MacBook. He and I spent more time talking about the MacBook than the
ruins. But he did suggest that we stay away from the rattlesnakes.
So we did. But we did see some impressive shed skins while tiptoeing
through the ruins.
And a rabbit. We saw a very nice rabbit.

I have not been a Mac user for a long time, but the disparity in
functionality between the 2 platforms is impossible to ignore. And I
can run Windows and Linux and whatever on the mac anyway. Mine is the
cheapest little white version, but still a honking machine.

I deluded myself that because I have a toolbelt and a really cool
Bosch drill driver that I was still in OK shape. Well, a tapemeasure
sure, but a jackhammer not so much. The hostess politely insisted
that I go the fuck home about 4 PM, and I caught a look at my
reflection in the glass of her patio doors and said "Somebody get that
old man a bath!"

I got your shed skins right HERE. Tens of thousands. We had a plague
of cicadas in our locality the past couple weeks. Underground for 17
years and all I got was this TShirt.

Fuck meat. I have been trying to be a vegetarian the past half year
or so, along with my daughter. She can hack it, but I cannot - but
she has A blood type and I have O. After a several days of no meat, I
have to pig out on supermarket fried chicken. Happens every week.
Eat those greasy parts right out of the bag in the front seat of the
truck, spit the bones into the parking lot. I could definately bite
an antelope with my morning cantelope.

Sending email from other than your local network can be curtailed by
your ISP - if you are trying to send through your local SMTP server.
Trick is to have a global mail account or other usable mail account
where you can use their SMTP server from anywhere.

Got it fixed. It was my own fault. Earthlink likes a specific port for
the smtp server. I was just letting it default. Figured it out and
fixed it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd better do that before I get home. IIRC Googling yourself is illegal
