| | | Learned to lace wheels on my '59 hardtail I've been doing a ground up resto on my '59 hardtail. It's been in
pieces for a couple years and I finally got it painted and ready
for assembly. A buddy of mine loves to lace wheels, so I took all
the old spokes off the wheels and repainted them, too. Last week
he and I put 'em together. If you haven't ever looked into the
science of spoked wheels, you oughta. It's an amazing journey into
engineering. Too much detail to go into in the bar, but I can tell
you that I received a good edu-muh-cation 'bout wheels.
Got a few pictures next door of the before and after. Unfortunately
I don't have pictures of the finished wheels. We still need to tighten
all the spokes and make sure each wheel is true, so I didn't see the
need to drag 'em home and back to his place again.

If you used the standard 4 cross pattern lacin' wheels isn't
complicated, but gettin' 'em all tight & the wheel true is a time consuming
PITA! I did a few when I was younger.......life's a learning process....... I
learned, & it's another reason I like alloy wheels. Still, any wrench time with
your scoot is time well spent!

That's what we did...the 4 cross. I always wondered why it was called
'lacing' until this project. They actually lace 'em between each other.
I understand that it distributes the load from one spoke to its
'partner' spoke to even things out.

Used to have that job as th' noob in an Indy shop a few lifetimes ago.
Learned to lace a star hub to a 21" wheel pretty damned fast.

Trueing those is th' time consuming part... bring lotsa patience and
coldbeers. You can make a trueing stand pretty easy (if he doesn't
have one) and you'll need a dial indicator. Harbor Freight has some
with a magnetic base fer less than $20.00. And you'll *never* get it
gnats ass, there's always a few thou of runout. It's kinda fun if ya
don't have a customer who's inna fuckin' hurry breathin' down yer
neck.

Oh man, does that take me back! High-end bikes were just starting to
get big when I was in college, and me and my buddies used to tune our
wheels on a regular basis, even tearing them down and relacing them
once a year. I know, just stupid stuff. You could actually get really
close to true with a good ear tuning them by pitch! |

I actually rather enjoyed lacing and truing (at least, when
working with newish wheels, or relacing a hub to a new rim/spokes).
It actually has rather meditative elements.
Trying to fix and old rusted POS, on the other hand, is
torture.
