He'd been ridin since the 70s, so it's knot like he was a noob. http://www.bellinghamherald.com/102/story/621720.html
I wuz in Lynnwood when I got the call, so I headed up there that night
fer the shock, an the misery the next day. Went an looked at the bike
an the truck (5 ton flatbed, notta pickup) annit's a real mess. Speed
limit's 55 on that road. Whole fronta the truck's pushed 6 inches to
one side. Happened after dark, an there's no signa the truck braking.
Mitch only lefta 4' skid before he hit. It was quick. He died at the
scene.
Gonna ride out there today an do me best to show support. He was
married to me oldest friend Dee, who I've known 45 years.
A fuckin failure to yield ticket's all ya get if ya wanna killa biker

Another good one's gone folks. Please join me in tippin one to a

I swanny that some dunderheads who never ride must think "only one
headlight, half the danger." Or that a motorcycle is as light and trivial
as a Schwinn bicycle and can stop on a dime if it has to. I near T-boned a
pickup once when it darted out of a parking lot in front of my bike and
stopped, then at the last moment as my brakes squealed the driver decided to
turn left into the oncoming lane and barely averted my sudden arrival in his
lap.
Some states do allow for reckless homicide convictions if the fatal
collision cannot be ascribed to something beyond the offender's control
(e.g. unexpected mechanical failure or heart attack). But Washington state
seems too liberal for that.
This chap looks like he drives that truck for a business (with a truck that
large) and the business' umbrella insurance policy will cover all. He'll
never lose a personal dime beyond that traffic ticket. If he's not the
business owner, maybe they'll fire him and he'll have to join the huge queue
of job seekers in this miserable economy, having to explain the "mishap" to
everyone that he wants to drive a truck for. If he's the business owner,
maybe the operative word will be "boycott."
In an effort to warn off idiots who would dart into my path, I manically
blink my fogs and my main headlamps whenever I spot any cage in a position
to do that. Even police cars, who have yet to give me any grief for it.

The DA can't be bothered firstly, he's too busy maintaining a political
agenda "bikers" don't rate his attention (unless he is busting a gang).
Second motorcyclists are percieved by the public as scofflaws or outlaws
and do not deserve desire the full protection of the law. Public
perception is bikers are often seen to ignore the laws or dish out their
own justice on the spot, so the perception is live by the sword die by
the sword. Feh!
I mean just throwing a leg over one of those contraptions is flippin the
bird to common sense and personal safety. So if a cyclist gets squashed
by a cager (even by accident), the cyclist got his just due, right! No
one in his right mind would ride one of those things in traffic, so the
bloke wasn't right and shouldn't have been there.....
Now if one of the city counsel man's kids gets hit on his bicycle we get
bike lanes and prosecution, but not for motorcyclists.....
(Bike lanes - like we'd stay in them)(I would, but only if they were on
the sidewalk!)
"They" are all out to kill you. Let down your guard for one instant and
"they" will strike. Protect yourself, cause no one is going to do it for
you. Nor will they pay off your families home after removing their main

Yeah, I hear that. You make a lot of good points.
Perhaps in error, I'm thinking that since a lot of Doctors and Lawyers
jumped on the Harley train the last fifteen years or so that the perception
has shifted a little. Maybe it is regional, but I've definately noticed
that cagers seem a little more aware of my presence now than they did twenty
five years ago, and I've been attributing it to the increased ridership,
which in turn means that more people know someone who rides, which in turn
increases overall awareness.
I still ride like I'm invisible, and I advise all around me to do the same.
When I was in Jersey the ABATE folks were circulating "Kill a biker, go to
jail" stuff, trying to get a manslaughter charge as mandatory for left
turners and such. Don't know where that landed, though.
*sigh* What a world. On the other hand, it's a beautiful world to see from
a saddle, provided that you are aware that you are invisible.

I've always felt that using a headlight modulator greatly increases
your
chances of being noticed by left turners. I run one on both my bikes
when I'm in heavy traffic areas. I've often noticed that when I'm out
in rural areas and a vehicle will come to a stop on a side road and
then I see that front hubcap start to rotate a bit and I hit the high
beam
to switch on the modulator and they hit the brakes.
YMMV

I think yer right. Figure if some clown is gonna pull in front of me,
I'm aimin' for th' drivers door. Did that once too. Didn't have
anywhere to go so I was takin' th' fucker out with me. Ya know how
everything seems to go in slo mo... I'd judged where his door was
gonna be at th' speed/distance everything was happenin', but th'
fucker stopped at th' last second and I t-boned his drivers side front
fender and went over th' hood.
Still managed to get an assult charge fer beatin' th' shit outta th'
fucker through his open drivers window. Th' guy was legally blind, no
glasses or contacts, and couldn't even locate his drivers license in
his wallet. Cop let him drive away and took me to jail. Next time
I'm not gonna aim Nasty style.
