| | | Neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night...
Well maybe not snow.
So I rode to work yesterday afternoon. It was 95 and sunny when I left the
house. As I rode off toward the northeast, I could see the storm clouds
gathering. As I rode up the farm to market road I could see the rain coming
down.
“I’ll stop at the gas station and put on my rainsuit” I thought. Good idea,
except it started pouring down about 2 miles before the station. I pulled
into the station, pretty well soaked, and stopped under the canopy by the
pumps.
The wind was blowing so hard the rain was ignoring the canopy and pelting
everything under the roof anyway. I donned my rainsuit and hid behind the
gas pump, stopping some of the wet.
After about 15 minutes of that, the rain slacked a bit and I hopped on to
continue my commute, of course the storm was moving the way I had to go.
I rode the rest of the 70 miles in soft to very hard rain.
As I pulled into the parking lot at work, the rain quit. I locked up, and
walked into the office, pretty much soaked.
I spent the night drying off and doing some work, then hit the (dry) road
for the ride home. It went much better, no rain, little traffic, and no
critters. I sure like that 100W high beam to light up the night.
Some observations:
1. Look at the radar before leaving the house. Tonight this wasn’t needed,
as it was pouring when I left for work.. I took the truck.
2. Keep a clean (and dry) set of clothes at work so I don’t have to wear
wet clothes all night.
3. If I can see a lot of rain ahead, put the rain suit on before riding into
it. (duh)
4. I used to not like riding at night, but I’ve come to enjoy it.
A round on the house this Friday night while I’m stuck at work, Shirley!

Great story, George, thanks! Riding in the rain isn't much fun, but
tryin' to wait things out under overpasses on the interstates is for
pussies. Just an observation, there. (no offense to anyone here,
intended). It's only water, that feels like needles hittin' yer face,
but it's only water. Put yer left hand up to shield yer face an'
squint thru yer fingers, right? You can only get so soaked, and it
feels _so_ good to finally strip to the soaking skin and dry off!
Give yourself a drink of choice, George.
For me? Thanks fer askin'. I've developed a new taste. I only like
embalming fluid, thanks. With ice an' a twist or lemon, if you please?

Ya know, when I lived in SoCal I would have agreed with you. Now that
I live in deer country, I almost never ride at night, and if I do it's
at like 45 mph.
Last night ride I really enjoyed was in Colo. Me, my wife, her cousin
and a friend of his, 4 bikes wide on the divided highway from Pueblo
to Canon City, 80 mph, full moon and a zillion stars in the sky.

We got hit by a similar storm yesterday.
Fortunately I had my rain suit on when I left the house as I knew it was
supposed to rain and it had already been raining. It started up soon after
I left.
The worst of it hit while I was safely inside at work and by the time I
left it was sunny again, relativelt speaking.

We have a visitor up here from Houston who is used to seeing deer.
He commented on the size of them here.
The average size deer is 140" and 260 lbs.
We don't have as many as down south but they grow pretty big.

Saw a bunch of deer a couple of weeks ago on a ride out in the forest. They
were from 150 to 300 lbs at a guess.

How big do they need to be? A damn 60 lb German Shepherd can ruin

Must be cross breeding with the moose.....
I think the deer on the west coast are a different breed, Coastal Whitetail?
