Default OT - Latest Darwin Award

Why it might not be a good idea to try and kite surf near a tropical
storm - much less a hurricane...

You'll probably have to click the "kite surfer slams into building" link.

We used to do that with parachutes when I was skydiving. 'Course we
didn't strap ourselves in the harness! We just held on to the risers so we
could let go when things got out of hand. Looks like that guy used his head...

There's always that natural cleansing of the gene pool.

Obviously you guys don't know anything about kite boarding.
My nephew started it a few years ago as a means to get himself off of drugs.
He saved money and bought the equipment and then saved enough to go to
Hawaii last summer. It is less dangerous than
motorcycles driving along a freeway next to semi's or among all of the
cagers on the busy streets. I know because I have
been riding motorcycles for over 30 years. How many times have we ridden our
bikes in rain, snow, hail and high winds, but yet we are
not considered Darwin Award candidates? But one guy flying a kite board in
high winds is?
I would rather my nephew do something he loves that is a little dangerous
than doing drugs.
Thanks for letting me vent and the next 2 rounds are on me.

Thanks for the iced tea.

Being from north of the 45th parallel, snow and ice sliding is a common way to pass the
time about half the year, and some of the youthful antics definitely tempt old Charles D.

If you get away with it, it makes a great story. If you don't, Darwin wins. If you sit on
the couch and watch TV you get fat, weak and then you die.

Risk aversion is shades of grey, imho. Kinda like Clint says...

The analogy is absurd. In your thirty years of riding in all conditions,
you obviously accurately assessed those conditions, otherwise you'd be
napping in dirt.

Strapping into the harness was instantly recognized as not too wise by
someone who is accustomed to doing things a little dangerous even before
special kite board rigs were available. Being strapped in appeared
unwise to me and the closest my experiences get me to that idiotic stunt
is wind surfing. At the end of the day, a doped up stupor and/or
overdose or brain damage from slamming your head into concrete while
harnessed to a kite in a tropical storm as described are both poor
choices. Natural selection rewards smart choices.

No, but I slept at a Holiday Inn last night. OTOH, It doesn't take a
fucking rocket scientist to figure out ya might get fucked up kite boarding
in a storm...

If you excercise every day, eat all the "right" foods and take care of
yourself, you will still die. For humans, Artifical selection trumps
natural selection.

I wonder if this idiot had insurance or will we all be paying for it
in some way or another.

i was surfing the television a day or two after the event and i saw the guys
mother being interviewed. while it may not be wise to judge someones
intelligence without at least hearing them speak, by the evidence i have
seen from him strapping himself to a kite in a hurricane (o.k. tropical
storm) and the way his mother handled herself on television (genetic
pedisposition) i would guess that the guy was not a rocket scientist.

i also understand those things have emergency releases to escape the kite.
apparently he also lacks "cat like" reflexes. my advice to him is to not
take up base jumping. of course i have had much dumber ideas in my day but
managed to avoid serious consequenses.
