Default Possible eyeball

Crossposted hither and yon...

On Wednesday, July 7th, I will be taking a little trip. I have to go
to Orlando for a face-to-face interview with the company that is
handling the paperwork for my new job. I'll be heading out of
Shreveport at around 6:30am.

I'll be in Memphis from approx. 7:30am until 9:15am (local time), and
then in Orlando from approx. 12:30pm until 6:20pm (local time). The
interview will take place at 3:30pm in a restaurant at the airport, so
I'll be free for a couple of hours before and likely a little while
after.

On the return trip I'll be in Atlanta from approx. 8:00pm until
10:00pm, when I wing it back to S'port. Of course I'll have to check
in for these flights at the appropriate times, too.

I know it's short notice, and I don't really expect anyone to drop
what they're doing and come see me, but I thought I'd throw it out
there just in case. :-)

My cell # is in the SENS database, if anyone might be able to visit.

Yeah yeah yeah. I know. I need some sleep.

Make that Wednesday, July 9th, and things will certainly work out
better for all involved.

I'm in Jacksonville for the moment. I'll be in Miami tomorrow. New York
Thursday. Charlotte last week. Sandusky next week. Beckley too. Orlando?
Not soon but sometime.

I got no defense other than the time just wasn't there. Next I'm down here
I'll carve out some recreational. Just started a new job so it's work, work,
work until they realize I'm faking it or I accidentally succeed. <sfsf>

Same reply for youse too Spunky. I think the wife & I will be down for

Got no sleep whatsoever. lol Left my house at 0345 Wed morning,
spent the day either waiting on a flight or actually on a flight (with
about an hour thrown in for the actual interview), and got home at
0100 Thursday morning. Even then, after more than 24 hours awake, I
was unable to sleep. Didn't actually go to sleep until almost 0300.

The actual interview turned out to be more or less them making sure we
knew what we are getting into, and that we understand our benefits and
salary and what's required of us. Very little actual "interviewing"
took place, once she ascertained that I was indeed the person in the
photos I'd been sending. lol

Not to pic nits, but have you talked to an accountant?
Do you know what your tax liability will be, and how
that relates to how long you stay?

Don't know myself, just wondering out loud.
I think it also depends on if you're getting paid by a US company, or a
Foreign Company?

The basic rule for tax exemption is being out of the country physically
for 330 out of 365 days. You can also establish a tax home outside the
country, and if you qualify as having your tax home out of the country,
the rule on being out of the country no longer applies.

Working for a foreign country outside the US means you don't have to pay
FICA. If you are working for a US company or a foreign subsidiary of a
US company you will pay FICA taxes.

I am not an accountant, and you should not use the above as tax advise,
or for anything other than encouragement to get answers from a
professional if you are an international worker.

Establishing a tax home outside the country...
Does that disqualify you from any 'services' in the US.

But what about *their* tax burden?
Is their tax rate higher than paying FICA?
And what happens to SS when you reach the magic age?

Well, not that I'm aware of. You can't draw Social Security if you don't
pay in, but you can drive on US roads if you're in the country.

No income tax in Saudi Arabia, so what you make is yours. In my case, I
spent a year outside the US, and my SS record shows no income for that
year. Won't make a difference to me, but if someone was to spend most of
a career outside the US there could be an impact.

And it's up for sale again, I may get it back.

Will make a difference in that when calc'ing what you're to be paid when you get
old enough........that year (when they average your lifetime salary) will show zero.

They take something like 35 years of your work history (we just talked about
this somewhere, I'm sure) and calc an average salary. Any years you didn't
report SS income are calc'ed at $0.

Those $0 years will lower your SS pension.......

Then there's the WEP deal. Which has more than a few WEAPing when it's
time to start drawing SSI. http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/wep.htm

I'll get a decent amount but I'm sure glad I never banked on SSI as part
of my total retirement equation.

Guess it's a good thing that I've always worked jobs in which I paid SS.

Me neither........some of that has snuck into our planning to get Julie retired,

But there is a maximum, right? IOW, if you make enough in the other 34
years, the 0 year won't knock you below the max.

Not to an accountant, per se, but I have checked all that out. It's
tax-free up to $82,000 if I am there at least 300-something days
(exact number slips my mind, but it's less than 365).

I s'pose........

Starting in the first year you worked....did you max out in SS wages??? There is
a ceiling there, anything over the ceiling you don't pay any more into the fund.

Going back to "my" beginning includes years I was in high school working fast
food, my military years.......the later years looked pretty decent though.

My average income over that period (which they base a SS pension) would get
knocked all to hell if I had some zero income years in the mix. If you didn't
work at all in a year...it counts as a zero income year.

Would suck to be a widow who went to work late in life.......then when it comes
time to do some SS......she's got 10 years with income showing, and 25 years of
zero income years dragging down the average. She'd get some of her late
husband's due...if he worked a job that paid into the fund.

I'm not counting on even getting one red cent from SS.....by the time
I reach anywhere near retirement age the system will be totally
defunct. I'll just work until I die, or go live in a cave somewhere
and eat roadkill.

It'll still be there for ya, just don't count on it to be even close to what
you'll need though.

We're figuring that between my SS and Julie's 401K......she'll be able to retire
at about 55 (she's 44 now). About the time her 401K starts to run out her SS
will be kicking it to cover it.

On the other hand I'll be in my 70's by then.......old, demented......pretty
much won't give a shit (well less than I do now).

Not if you're at max. And I *think* it's just the last X number
of years, usually at your highest rate for most people.

Define "max" and the context of how you're using it.....

Here's a quote from SS's website:

"Social Security benefits are based on earnings averaged over most of a worker's
lifetime. Your actual earnings are first adjusted or "indexed" to account for
changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received. Then we
calculate your average monthly indexed earnings during the 35 years in which you
earned the most. We apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic
benefit, or "primary insurance amount" (PIA). This is the amount you would
receive at your full retirement age, for most people, age 65. However, beginning
with people born in 1938 or later, that age will gradually increase until it
reaches 67 for people born after 1959. For more information, see The Full
Retirement Age is Increasing."

Your benefits are calc'ed on the average earnings of your best 35 years. Which
is nearly what I said........I thought I remembered this since I'd recently been
in a discussion about it...probably here (would have to check the archives).

I can see how zero income years wouldn't have much of an effect if you had
enough high earning years to put you at the "max" of what they will pay out to
any individual.....

But........

When I consider max with SS though, I'm more in mind of the max earnings that
you must pay SS on....over which they don't take out any more. I would think
that few people have 35 years of that.......

Here's a little guideline:

Maximum Earnings Taxable: 2006 2007 2008
Social Security (OASDI* only) $94,200 $97,500 $102,000
Maximum Tax Withheld $5,840.40 $6,045 $6,324

Hope that all lines up.......
