Maybe it was loud pipes that made him unaware of the vehicle approaching
from behind him? Never quite understood why motorcyclists would want to
make it more difficult to hear what was around them.

Hear what? The gentle tinkle of church bells ringing, the wistful sighs
of schoolgirls as they see leather clad bikers going by?

Oh fuck you, shit for brains.

The loudest bike ever made is pretty much whisper quiet when decelerating,
as long as it's not backfiring.
Sometimes you're just in the wrong place at the wrong time and nothing will
save you.

Years ago I had a neighbor who's boyfriend would idle his motorcycle
outside early on saturday and sunday mornings. It was loud enough to
disturb my sleep.

I won't disagree with that.

But I will disagree with this. Many vehicles are at their loudest when
decelerating by braking against compression.

Loud pipes DO save lives. While riding my brand new VN-800 with stock pipes,
folks would change lanes without being aware of my presence and would nearly
run me off the highway. With a set of V&H Cruzer pipes installed, that no
longer happens. I don't need a scientific study to demonstrate the
difference between quiet and loud. It is obvious to any fool that has ridden
their bike both ways. I miss the quiet. I do not miss the near misses with
autos and trucks.

People who have loud pipes are just a bunch of immature children who like to
be the center of attention. Loud pipes do not make you safer, just annoying.
I have been tail-ended by a car that didn't see the car behind me. People do
not pay attention when driving. If bikers want to be safer they would light
their bikes like Xmas trees. But the bikers with loud pipes put as little
lights they can by law. Making themselves more invisible to outer driver and
making them less safe. I have watched my friends with loud pipes pass
traffic and watch the cars move to block them. So loud pipes piss off others
and make you less safe.

Do you practice such levels of ignorance and incoherence, or is it an

Ooh! Look! You came up with two insults that alliterate! But the words
were inappropriately chosen. By the looks of it, Buster52 has an innate
ability to write informed and coherent posts. You, on the other hand,
had no facts on your side, so you were reduced to stupid insults. And so
quickly, too.

As for facts...

Loud pipes are annoying whether I'm riding or driving. And they're
ineffective because most of the noise is directed to the back of the
bike.

I recall one asshole biker who regularly rode down New Monthgomery and
then right on Howard. He would typically wrestle his way through dense
traffic, and if some car didn't get out of his way, he'd blip his
throttle and annoy a thousand people. It's that sort of rude, immature
behavior that makes people hate bikers.

I installed extra lights on my motorcycle ... nice bright LEDs, all
perfectly legal. I'm visible and conspicuous; cars tend to respect my
space more than they did before.

Must be innate ability, I don't think anyone could practice to that
level.

Come, come, Mr Woof. Read his post and try to comprehend what he
actually wrote:

'I have been tail-ended by a car that didn't see the car behind me.'

Must have been going at a *hell* of a speed.

'But the bikers with loud pipes put as little lights they can by law'

Ridiculous generalisation, as well as being awful English (and I should
know since mine is pretty rubbish)

'Making themselves more invisible to outer driver and making them less
safe.'

What is an 'outer driver' prey? And how can something me 'more' invisible?

Oh, and thanks for noting the alliteration. Given the US centric group
spectrum, I figured it would not be noticed.

Overly loud pipes, I agree, are annoying. Ineffective as what?

Sounds like a sensible plan.

My observation is that loud pipes do scare deer, but not necessarily away. Deer seem
to have only a few modes- mating, mellow munching, traveling, and freeked out of
their tiny minds. In a lot of the vehicle-deer accidents around here, the deer run
into the vehicle. A local woman rider had one leap up and land on her gas tank by way
of the windshield.

Of course, city deer might be altogether different...

Perfectly clear to me. While waiting in the right (outside) lane with cages
on 3 sides and a guardrail close by on the right I heard tires shrieking
behind followed by crash, crash, crash, getting steadily closer. There's no
place to go or time to bail out! I tense up.. then CRASH! ... and , praise
the lord, it's in the other lane. First time I ever had my sphincter muscle
cramp.

Similarly, but the ped was a tall young woman with a fluffball dog on a
leash. When I changed down the fluff panicked and ran, wrapping the leash
around her ankles and making her fall. I thot of stopping but thot the
better of it <g>.

Loud pipes gain me measurably and noticeably more hp. I'm running
Rineharts on my Harley. On occasion, they seem to help people to the
realization that they need to get the fuck out of my way when I split
lanes, and maybe once somebody reconsidered their left turning decision,
but it doesn't guarantee anything. People who ignore large men on 650
lb. motorcycles can ignore the noises they make, too. OTH, I even find
my bike unpleasant to listen to, and if I could find pipes that worked
as well or better and wouldn't generate so much racket, I'd probably
install them.
