Default A very nice ride

Shirley we need a round first ...
Took a couple of guys for a little ride yesterday . Left my house at the
crack of seven , headed west and a bit north . Seems there was this little
get-together up in Mountain View (Ar-kansas) , called "Mountains , Music ,
and Motorcycles ...
The first hundred or so miles aren't anything special , droning along on
hwy 64 and then hwy 167 , passin' trucks and locals . At Pleasant Plains ,
that all changes ... we turn west onto hwy 87 , and at first it's OK , a few
sweepers , then they start to get a little closer together , and tighter .
Before we get into the really windy roads , we must have am iinterlude of
relatively straight highway (25 to Drasco), the main route from Memphis to
the lake and Heber Springs area . Back on the road after a gas stop , we
ended up on a nice but not toooo nice road , hwy 5 into Mountain View ,
where we met up with Old Crow and his Missus , along with other locals I've
met and ridden with .
After wandering around , looking at all the bikes , we decided it was time
for a BEER RUN ! Since Stone County is dry , this means more riding ... and
87 headed north out of MV is one of the best in the area . It's just one
curve after another , with a bunch of up and down tossed in for good measure
.. It tee's into hwy 14 near 56 Arkansas , another relatively straight road
(well , I guess the relativity depends on where yer at ... Kansans might
find it a challenge ...) that crosses into a wet county . After a brief
interlude at an undisclosed location to drink some of that beer (and a
couple of sips of Wild Turkey 101 ...) it's back on the road towards MV .
Old Crow and MamaLynn are entered in the slow races at 2:00 , so we gotta
jam ... YEEEHAW !!
Safely back in town , Wally ends up against his wife in the firsr heat ...
guess who won ? But , as luck would have it , she washed out in rthe second
heat . We hung around a while , checked out some more bikes , then decided
to head out to The Crows Nest , for another beer and a look at Pearl , the
82 RoadGlide Old Crow is rebuilding . The project is coming along nicely ,
and for once his driveway isn't like dodging craters in a mine field . After
some conversation , some swapped lies and much mutual backslappin' , we get
back on the road for Memfrica . Heading south on hwy 263 , we get into some
of the best twisties of the day , but there's a fly in our ointment - we had
waited for a storm to blow thru our route , and the roads were wet . Since
I've never ridden these roads wet , I slowed it down a bit , but it was
still great . Hwy 263 over to hwy 92 , back to hwy 25 and back over our
route from earlier in the day .
This is either the tiird or fourth year this event has been hosted there ,
and it just keeps on gettin' better . There were at least 600-700 bikes in
town , almost impossible to find a parking place . Hopefully Old Crow (or I
can prolly get a copy from one of the guys who rode with me , I forgot my
camera) will post a shot of the crowded parking on the square ... all told
we rode a little over 400 miles , about half on windy two lanes .
And we had an absolutely awesome day !

This thing corners like it's on rails . Just keep crankin' it on , it just
keeps leanin' . I'm honestly not a good enough rider to push this thing past
it's capabilities . Or maybe my nads just aren't big enough ... either way ,
the bike is much more stable in curves , and just feels more "planted" on
the road . Old Crow and I were discussing his experiences with the new (to
him) Road Glide , and he said he could feel the swingarm movement , but only
when pushing it two-up . I never really felt any swingarm movement , just a
couple of times it started wobbling on the freeway .
That was the long answer , the short one is YES !

Sounds like you have that bike running good. Last time I rode through
Arkansas was three or four years ago. I enjoyed the roads, and admired
the verdure.

You just gotta love when something of your own design works out as well
as you'd hoped. It's like the very definition of gratifying.

Cool.

The bike is awesome ... hard to believe a bike this big can handle this
well . I can't take any credit for the motor , just keep the oil changed and
feed it high quality fuel .
It was kinda humid , but not bad as long as we were moving . Everything is
very green this year , had quite a bit of rain compared to the last couple .
The ticks and chiggers are havin' a bumper year too ... so we stayed outta
the woods .

In a way , it's even better than I expected . Along with the handling , I
was expecting a harsher ride , with more noise transmitted by the solid
parts . Neither of those things has happened , and I'm just as happy as a
Murff .
Grab Shirley on her way past an' tell her to set 'em up for the house on
me .

didja make new axle adjusters ?
the kind with the bigger "plug" end inside the swingarm, to give more
stiffness and surface area to control any twisting or bending/breaking
at the axle ?
just windering.

Guess where my next few evenings are going to be spent ? Got a couple of
pieces of steel out in the shed that will be perfect ... ya know , I've
often cursed those damn things , even had to weld up a Sportster swingarm
where it was worn half thru . Thanks for pointing out something I hadn't
thought about !!

<me too>

I installed one of them TWR Stabilizers last week, Friday took it for a test
ride up in the mountains.....no real tight twisties, but loads of downhill
sweepers that always tended to get my Ultra wigglin' around a bit if I was a
little too quick.

My "wiggle" usually starts in downhill sweepers around 80mph (most speed limits
here out in BFA run 75)......

Got it up passed 80, perfect, hit 90.....nice....95, like it was a frikken
bullet train.

THAT's about where I decided I was about through testing......

#1. Didn't want to run into the back of Doc Quin....
#2. There were a few cages out there...
#3. <sfsf> We were getting into town......

Now to take the damn thing into the dealer this week to get the shift linkage
replaced under warranty....frikkin thing fell off before we got to Globe for
lunch, well before we hit the downhills.

Nice guy at the Polaris dealer in Miami (Arizona) donated mechanic's wire to
hold it together so I could get home. His was the first driveway I came to when
I realized my shifter was fubar.

As Arlo would say , "It's a movement , man !" It'z been interesting
watching the results of those who have installed a device . I'm sold , the
next (well , if there is a next , or should I say 'nother) bike will get the
same or similar devices installed .
I'm just plain sold on a third link , no matter what the design . Bean
counters that made this situation should be strapped onto a bike and
tankslapped .

At the beginning of next season we'll find out the difference between
the 3rd link setup and the nylon-inserts-in-the-mount setup.
I'm thinking the inserts will work just as well, without all the extra
bracketry.

BTW, which one of those 2 guys was which? Couldn't keep 'em straight.

The tall guy on the RK is Jim Kelley , a coworker . The short guy on the
Sporty is James Egbert - I've always called him Micheal , cuz that's what he
went by when he was younger . His dad is a good friend .

The TWR IS all that. I put it to the test in them sweepers on the
Snelling and La Grange rd's. east of Merced yesterday. I pushed harder
and faster in the turns more than I ever would before. There was no
wallow or that sloppy feeling like before.

Slabbin' it at speeds of 70-85 I noted the same tight feel. No wiggle.
No squirrelly feel w/ the rain grooves either. It was easier to hold a
line.

Yep........I've always HATED the amount of buffeting I got when I was passing
semi trucks.....think felt pretty damned stable now.

Check th' Sta-Bo or Tru trac or TRW sites (don't remember which ones)
for some ideas. They've been sellin' those for years now. It's a
pretty easy project too.

I got some 4130 stock that will be just right for this one , just gotta
mill it square ... should be a piece of cake , fit it about .002 or .003
side clearance , maybe around .010 top/bottom so it can slide and not get
bound . Might as well make some fancy end caps while I'm at it , there's a
piece of 400 series SS out in the shed just achin' to be something .

Only problem is that this w/e I'm moving a camper . The wife wants our
unit moved to where she teaches , which is 50 miles from where we live .
She figgers the two hours she saves will come in handy - not to mention
saving bookoo bucks on gas . She's gonna need that time , she's going for
her national board teacher cert this year . When she passes (notice I didn't
say if ?) it will be an automatic $5k annual salary increase . And the
ability to teach anywhere in the country ...
