Default Winter gear (non-heated)

Any suggestions for non-heated winter gear? I'm thinking of replacing mine
this year. I ride pretty much in any weather over 35 and sometimes get
caught in the rain. The old leathers are worn out for it. Appreciate any
info you can pass along.

Check w/ Cycle Gear for stuff. I quit wearing heavy leather and never
looked back. I use a Frank Thomas jacket and First Gear over-pants.
Half the dough of the HD counterparts. Leather gloves w/ fairly tall
gauntlets from these guys.
http://www.foxcreekleather.com/220.html plus they have plenty of the
other apparel also.

I would've if Banker hadn't seen 'em. He had to have them and I felt
obliged what with him coming all the way to the left coast to ride
around the Sierras with me.

We ride a lot in weather like that, here in Canada, Bryan. Because
weather doesn't come in just hot or cold, I prefer my gear to be
comprised of parts that I add on or remove as conditions warrant.

Most important item in cold weather: Long underwear. Buy it. Wear
it. Often, you won't need much more.

Then, for the legs, pants (leather being the best) over that and, if
necessary, chaps over the pants. Then put elephant ears on the engine
guard for additional protection. All of those together will take you
through the coldest weather.

For boots, I find one-piece slip-ons work best (no air gets in).
Might need to put on an additional layer of socks. Putting feet on
highway pegs helps keep feet warmer too (the cold air impacts the
thick leather soles on bottom).

Upper body: Never mind your pride about non-heated, get the heated
vest! One with sleeves and elastic cuffs is especially good. Having
a thermostat is not important. Add a good leather jacket with an add-
in, cold-weather liner to that and you're good for almost all
weather. For the real cold I have a sheepskin-lined leather jacket I
use instead.

Then add to that one of those leather bib type neck tubes to keep the
air from getting down your neck. For more cold protection (below
zero) you'll want a balaclava if you wear a half-helmet. Seal it over
or under the leather bib.

Gloves, well, there's cold weather gloves and there's heated grips and
there's heated gloves too. I wired some grip heaters made for
snowmobiles into my handlebars (costs very little). That, with even
thin gloves, keeps my hands from freezing under most conditions. If
necessary, I change up to insulated gloves. One of the things I like
about the heated grips is they let me wear thin gloves for much more
of the time - better 'feel' for the controls that way.

I have the road gear extreme, it lost its water resistance real quick,
the collar lost its stiffness as well, but it is warm with the liner
in it, I hate cold too.

I think if I were going to replace my leather stuff I'd go with a
ballistic nylon / gortex combo of some kind. I have an Icon mesh
jacket that I love, I'd probably check them out to see if they have
any heavy (non-summer, I mean) stuff that's waterproof. Joe Rocket
stuff doesn't fit me well, but Andrzej has one of their ballistic
jackets that he loves. Sorry I can't help specifically.

Fox Creek! Unless you're in a sexually oriented band skip the chaps &
go for the leather jeans. They keep more than your shins warm............ A
good leather jacket with a removable liner, thermal underware, heavy socks, &
two weights of gloves (one for cold & one for *real* cold).
Layers are your friend! Not only for the ability to go lighter if you
run into any warm air, but because each layer traps some warm air between it's
self & the other layers.

Over 35, I wear my electric Gerbing jacket turned OFF under my
Aerostich Roadcrafter. Over 45, just the Aerostich, maybe with a
sweatshirt. 25-40 I add the Gerbing pants over my street pants and
under the 'stich. Under 25, I turn on the Gerbing jacket. If I'm
riding all day, I'll turn on the Gerbing pants.

Summer gloves on heated grips. Fabric lowers snapped on to the crash
bars. Sidi waterproof boots. LL Bean Goretex rain jacket and pants
with mesh liner, half the price of the very nice Harley goretex suit,
sized large enough to go over the 'stich. The 'stich is adequate for
light rain and short cloudbursts behind the fairing and the fabric
lowers. Batwing fairing edge wind deflectors from December to early
March. Full face helmet, taller windscreen October-April.

Done; ride all year in northern VA.

The "better feel" relates to "better for lighting a smoke while
riding" of course. Gotta handle those things careful because they say
cigarettes can kill you.

It was 35 on my ride to work this morning. Balaclava, ski coat, and quilted
overalls. Absolutely no protection if I were to hit the pavement (aside
from the module helmet and gauntlets, when I'm not wearing the Gerbings
gloves), but I'm warm.

Fox Creek for the coat.
These overalls are easy to get on and off.

Heh. So they say. I do love heated grips, though. Got them two
years ago this month, and can't BELIEVE that I rode through the prior
28 winters without them!

Thanks folks! Went down to a local bike store and found a Kilimanjaro 4 and
some Cortech gortex with thinsulate and a decent breadth and length of a
gauntlet. I think between that and my lower extremity gear I'm good to go
for a while. Thanks for the fox creek link. I see some moolah going that
direction soon also. Again, thanks and ride safe.
