| | | Brit Bike Snob! While riding my Road King home last night, I spied a 1969 Norton Commando
Fastback, pulling out from the curb. I actually pulled over and waited for
this guy to get a chance to talk to him about his bike. Finally, I pulled up
along side this guy and said ''69 Fastback?'. He was dressed in shorts, a
Triumph shirt and an old style helmet. I had never seen him at any of the
British events before. He looked at my bike, gave me a very distasteful look
and shook his head in disgust. I said again, louder "Isn't that a 1969
Fastback?". He sneered, "yeah", and jumped the light, turning left, in front
of a whole bunch of cars. Although it appeared rather complete, his Norton
was not in very good condition.
Anyway, his attitude irked me. I don't think I've ever come across an
attitude like that from any other motorcyclist before. I tried to catch up
with him to tell him what I thought of his manners, but he went straight on
Riverside and I was turning left on Fletcher.
Even in my worst days of British Motorcycle snobbery, I never acted like
that to another rider. especially to one who was interested in my machine.
Do people hate Harley's that much? I guess so.
But who am I to say, anyway. I'm very narrow-minded when it comes to MC
brands.
Oh, I rebuilt the twig like front end on my Honda CBX. Got a rebuilt magneto
for the Velocette and had the 5000 mile service done on the Buell.

Just because someone likes some of the same stuff you do, doesn't
mean they can't be a complete asshole. This is why I don't really
fit into groups centered around owning a particular brand or model
of bike- why should I think that a bunch of random people who
happen to have the same bike as me would be good company? That
said, I did join the Concours Owners Group, mostly for the tech
info, but I never really got into the social side of it. I've
ridden a few times with a cow-orker and his buddies from the GWRRA,
and they are a nice enough crowd, but that sort of highly organized
group is pretty much the exact opposite of the kind of motorcycle-
related socializing that I am interested in.

Not just Harleys. Last summer whilst on my Beemer, I pulled up next to
a guy riding a tasteful Harley chopper. It was a beautiful metallic
orange. I raised my face shield and said, "Wow. Gorgeous paint job!" He
flipped me the finger and took off.
Unlike you, I did not attempt a second encounter at the next light.

I just really can't imagine such a response. I'd have to
assume that you were either misunderstood, or your
comment was interpreted as sarcastic.
Additionally, related to the OP's Norton/Road King
encounter - You never really know what may be going
on in someone else's day. It could be that you've just
interrupted/experienced a very bad event in the day
of the other participant. |

When I've been on my Harley I've gotten this type of friendliness from
Beemer riders.
On my Valkyrie, I get similar stuff from Harley guys, ...oh, and women these
days.
Personally I think the Beemer riders hold the highest percentage regarding
snob ratio, although that discounts the sportbike crowd where I'm quite sure
the Duc crowd reigns supreme. |

I must lead a sheltered life cuz I don't recall ever encountering an
attitude like that, or even close. From time to time I might come
across someone trying to show off and do something dumb, but for the
most part I find the riders I meet to be sociable.
Of course considering how long you have been riding and the people you
have met, finding one asshole after all of those years and miles
speaks well of our fraternity.

Heh, I've learned plenty from narrow-minded people, am that way myself
on more than one topic too. Today I was at the Home Depot and noticed a
toppled bike. A bit rare for these parts (Vancouver). He had leaned it
on the side-stand near the bicycle rack and apparently somebody had just
pushed it slightly, it had a few marks on it, but nothing that resembled
a car or truck backing into it.
What I noticed was the Japanese manufacturer plate and a logo on the
side for which I forget the prefix, but which ended in '250'. That was
what caught my dim eyes, a 250cc four-banger with four carbs. Then I
caught sight of the owner coming out. He just laughed it off, said it
was his daily driver and he got it cheap from whoever imported it, 1986
model. (Don't understand why those small, fast bikes are unpopular in
N.A., maybe that will change one of these days for reasons other than
style or impressive numbers.) I liked his attitude, if not his style.
It was rainy and cold here but his arms were bare to the shoulders and
he wore no gloves. My crap circulation would stall permanently if I
rode that way. Looked like he had fewer years on his body than I but
more klics for sure. Said it was his daily driver and while he never
challenges the big sport bikes at the lights, he sometimes gets a kick
out of passing the more ineffectual riders on the turns. I told him my
favourite spectator sport is watching the practice days at Mission
Raceway here. Last time, I was watching one of the Seattle CB160 racers
pass most of the 600/1000 riders on the many curves, both on the inside
and on the outside. Of course, he got lost in the straights, but I have
to cheer for both of those crazy guys. |

Get used to it, there are people out there who believe that they have
NOTHING in common with you, regardless of what they are riding or
driving and they do NOT want to associate with you on the basis of
motorcycle ownership.
Like, one time I tried to strike up a friendly conversation with some
tourists at a national park, and the man said to his female companion,
"Here's another one of those self-appointed tour guides, let's move
over to the other view point.
I followed a bunch of riders with California plates for miles and
miles through a national park, just to tell the tail end rider that
his saddlebag was unlatched, and those guys made it perfectly clear
that they weren't interested in having another rider join their group,
even one from California, but I didn't want to ride with them at all,
I was just trying to help.
Another time, I was talking to a rider on a brand new Ducati. The guy
was wearing a Harley style jacket with a tank scratching belt buckle,
and, even worse, he was
wearing pole climber boots with all the hooks on the laces.
When I told him he should buy some sportbike oriented gear, he got
very angry and told me that he had spent a lot of money on that bike,
and NOBODY was going to tell HIM how to enjoy it...
Last I saw of him, he was tied a samurai bandana with the rising sun
meatball on it on his head, and he was making kamikaze runs through
the twisties. |

OR the bikes couldn't handle the road. ;^) It's was embarassing to
pass them in onseys and twoseys.
Not that it's a dare though. I'm warning you Radakk has some tasty
bits available for my purchase.

I thought both Vincent and Brough Superior trump everything. They are
on a level beyond mere motorcycles such as the ones discussed.

any school child knows that...

I was once told stopping off in Hollywood to change planes was too
long.
