What amazed me is that the DMV appealed to the state supreme court. That is
the DMV's right, of course, but ...

Why not? They have the taxpayer's money to pay for lawyers. They are
probably worried that if they lose this case their authority to control
words on plates will be diminished.

Well, apparently they lost the case and the ability to control words on
plates, so they shot themselves in the foot.

I do wonder what's _wrong_ with the lawyers who work for the government
these days. They're going for broke with these really pathetic arguments
that wouln't survive a high-school debating team, let alone a competent
opposing counsel.

That would be my guess as well (about why they don't want to lose this one).

This guy's case was a bit of an exception because I think he was legit.
Anybody who wanted the Urban Dictionary word probably would have used HO
rather than HOE (haven't looked it up, but I think HO is spelled that way).
His intent probably really did come from TAHOE.

Next, I expect BITCH-HOE to go to someone who hauls female dogs in their
Tahoe pickup truck.

There was a case in one of the states where someone had the plate:

EMTA3

which went unchallenged for a while but finally the state revoked it. The
state finally figured out that when you see the plate in a mirror it reads
"EATME".

At least Whoopi Goldberg spelled it right--her production company is "One Ho
Productions". And, being the entertainer that she is, she has a monologue
that goes with the name.
