Default Does anyone know how badly Harley Davidson would be hurt...

Since Honda in Marysville is a supplier to Harley Davidson (and many
others as well) does anyone know what would happen to HD motorcycles
if Honda stopped supplying parts to them.

Some people have voiced alarm about this. Does anyone know what Honda
supplies to Harley Davidson?

The Marysville plant has already stopped producing some motorcycle
models and will cease all motorcycle production early next year. The
plant is being converted to make suspension components.

The only thing I can think of that Honda, through a subsidiary, may supply
to H-D is suspension parts so that would seem to be a winner.
Does Honda own Showa?

There is always going to be someone else willing to supply the largest
manufacturer of motorcycles in N. America.

Yeah and Marysville was a final assembly place anyway. The parts
mostly if not all came from Japan. They were just bolted them
together in Marysville.

I visited Marysville in 2002 and that was my impression too. Engines
came from another plant, and components came from a lot of places near
and far with many smaller local suppliers as well. It's a LOT of the
local economy. I was told Honda was Ohio's largest employer. Hope they
keep making cars there just to keep the good people of Ohio employed.

I'm not worried about HD, they can certainly fend for themselves
regarding suppliers.

I need to go back down to York and visit the HD plant. I had a trip
planned last year to get there and the Martin guitar factory but life
got in the way. PA is a great place to ride. I went hungry there.

I was wondering why one couldn't find food in Pa.

I don't know. I do know that when Honda came into Marysville they
brought with them about 200 suppliers for things such as electronics
and glass. Honda has instrument and ignition companies. I believe
they might own Keihin Carburetors.

Is there? As I understand it, when Triumph and the other UK brands
started back up they were buying a huge amount of their parts from the
Japanese.

If I were going to guess, I'd guess it would be brakes and components,
suspension, electronics, carburetors. When I spent a lot of time
rebuilding engines (small engines) the quality of US made carburetors
was terrible.

The largest supplier of ignition lock sets in the USA used to be
Briggs & Stratton. But I doubt they ever made anything for
motorcycles. I'm really out of touch with these things now having
moved from industry to computers some 20 years ago.

They might even be sourcing from China.

I was just there, it's a short trip from here. They have a lot of
neat German hydraulic presses and some interesting laser cutting
devices. Apparently EVERY side stand is made there although almost
all other parts are multiple sourced.

They did not of course mention their reliance on HONDA although the
display that they have prior to entering the display area mentions
that they outsource.

The former AMF plant resembles other US plants, such as the (now
closed) GM plant in Baltimore and the soon to be closed Chrysler plant
in Wilmington (both of which I've walked through repeatedly).

If they do then they have lost one of their biggest customers.
All Harleys since 2007 are fuel injected.

If Honda drops out of the supply chain, assuming they are indeed in it to
start with, there will be a line up waiting to jump on.
Personally, I would like to see all H-Ds come with a Thundermax
ignition/fuel system as stock equipment.
