Default Garage Night: Steering head bearings - watch episode 4 now!

Latest instalment of our web TV show for bikers is up:

http://www.garagenight.tv

Pete shows how to get the old bearings off, the cups out, and the new
bits lubed and installed.

All the best,
Waz

Works for you, does he?

Sorry, but I closed the window in a fit of laughter when the numpty

I see. If it's not an advertising-funded, broadcast TV show, it just
can't be any good...

For basically off-the-cuff scripting, it was well done and informative
and I've noticed from their previous work, they're improving a lot as
they do more. I'd like to see more people doing what those guys are
doing.

Hey Adrian.

If you listen again, you can hear both Pete and myself give a bit of a
laugh after I say 'These are your handlebars'. I guess it passed you
by.

Next time I'll say something like 'These are the handlebars - A LITTLE
JOKE, ADRIAN, OF COURSE YOU ALREADY KNEW THEY WERE THE HANDLEBARS!!'

No, Don doesn't work for me, but if I'm not mistaken he's watched one
or two of the videos and offered suggestions along the way. *This is
your cue to offer a suggestion along the lines of Nige's above.*

Here's a clue for you. A stream-of-consciousness unscripted, unedited
commentary really isn't impressive or professional. It makes you look
like some amateur who's wondering what to do with the camcorder he got
for his birthday.

The fact that it may look 'unprofessional' is all part of it IMHO. I
think it's fun and makes a refreshing change from all of the dumbed down
health and safety bollocks we have to put up with on 'real' TV. (Top
Gear might be the exception to that rule)

At least Waz got off his arse and did something productive with his
camcorder.

I've tinkered with bikes for *cough* years now and still managed to pick
up a tip or two from it.

Just a tip waz. As has been discovered by other people who try to
promote their own products on usenet, if you start arguing with the
critics, it'll never end well for you or your product.

Because the customer is always right? I thought that was a US thing?

Oh Nev, we're doing something about bikes, that might be of interest
to other bikers, and mentioning it on some forums about bikes. Does
that not seem to make sense to you? Does it not also seem that it
would be rude NOT to stick around and joust with the critics? If you
didn't stick around, you'd just be doing the same as the sp*mmers, who
lob in a bulk email about their cheap knock-off watches and then
disappear.

Honestly, 'Here's a clue ...' 'Just a tip ...' How patronising.

No not because the customer is always right.

Precisely.. and as I know you have seen before Al, when product
producers/sellers start arguing in a public forum with critics/trollers
they seem to slip into the same mode of argument.. or as you so
eloquently put it, acting like a cunt themselves. Not good for
business. Ignore them and they will probably go away, challenge them
and bring your product/self under intense scrutiny.

Hey Nev, I'm selling something? You'd better tell me what it is,
because a few people around the place must owe me a few quid! ;-)

'Intense scrutiny' is more than welcome, by the way - you'd be kinda
naive to put videos up on the internet without expecting it.

'Not good for business'? I hardly think jousting with a few trolls on
Usenet is going to put me out of [whatever] business [you have decided
I am in]!

Enjoying the [somewhat tangential] debate!

I know how much you dislike being patronised Waz, but if you actually
read what I wrote, you might notice I wasn't directing those comments to
you, nor was I talking about you. Not sure exactly what debate you're
referring to either.. maybe you're reading a different thread?

Wazza. Nev has a point. We run into the same problems when we try to
refute public misconceptions about some of the agricultural practises
that are in use.

The detractor can say anything they want, and are under seemingly no
compulsion to back up their claims. We (you) on the other hand, have
every word scrutineered and challenged - and woe betide you if you make
one little mistake, because then it doesn't matter how valid any of our
(your) other arguments are, as they all are tarred with the brush of
worse possible scenario.

It irks me - but it's a very real aspect.

That's why the only detractors I bother arguing with are those that at
least attempt to use factual data.

The others are just pissing in the wind and aren't worthy of your
attention

Err no. I looked at the episode and thought it was pretty good. I have
changed steering head bearings myself a few times and I still learnt
something new from this episode.

Well done to the authors for for actually doing something useful.

Hey Peter! We did the first Toowoomba netride together - remember? You
put an email out on aus.moto and it was just you and me mate, all
those years ago. What are you riding these days?

Nev, I did misinterpret what you were saying - my apologies. I failed
to follow the golden rule: read twice, reply once.

I don't necessarily agree, though, about not arguing with detractors/
critics. When people are directly criticising what you're doing or
saying, I think you should respond and debate with them - isn't that
supposed to be what Usenet is about (anyone remember that?). Let's go
back to what Adrian was saying earlier in the thread - I don't agree
with him, but after his initially 'numpty narrator/FFS' comment (I
might get that added to my caption on the videos), when I responded he
at least elaborated and made a second, more meaningful contribution
that told us what his beef actually is (even though I still don't
agree with him, and hearteningly it appears I'm not alone ;-) )

People who are outright trolls, as opposed to detractors/critics =
different story.

Muck Phee! 1998/99 perhaps? You though I had a BMW GS? Down MaMa Creek
and up Flagstone Creek Rod? Yeah. I remember. What in the hell are you
up to these days - apart from making instructional u-tube videos?

Upgraded from the Suzi GS450 to a BMW K100. Broke that and now ride an
FJR1300.

Glad to see you doing well and in fine form. Would never have picked you
from the vids. Bloody small world.

Yep, that's me, I had a Cagiva Elefant (still do, though it's a 750,
whereas I had a 900 back then). You're right, I think I was expecting
a GS rider that day. I hope I didn't seem disappointed!

If you search aus.motorcycles for 'Toowoomba netride' it appears it
was just before Christmas 1998. I even wrote a report: 'A scenic run
from the Eton Vale BP, down through Ma Ma Creek into the Lockyer
Valley then back to Toowoomba via Flagstone Creek Road.'

I am living and working in London these days. Are you still in the
Woomba? What is the motorbiking scene like there these days? You might
see my good mate Dave riding round occasionally on his blue and white
Ducati Monster 750 done in Shelby Cobra stripes. I know how that
sounds, but it's a sweet bike.
