| | | Greetings From Daytona Beach, Florida Like most days at the racetrack, today had its high points and its low
points. We were at the track before 7AM, it was below freezing, and we
set up our garage, unloaded the trailer, and George and I went to the
mornng session of Team Hammer race school.
In the first on-track session, George was riding the "B" bike and it
only made one lap before stopping running. Back in the garage after
the session, it was quickly discovered that a blown main fuse had let
the battery run down. A new fuse and a a battery charge fixed the
problem.
I was on the "A" bike, and it was not running well. It was spitting
and missing and bogging at full throttle and anything over about 8,000
rpm. I managed to learn my way around the track in spite of the
running problems.
In session two, George's bike ran fine, but mine was still running
like crap. When we came in from Session two, Donnie and Justin and
Mike all got to work, tore off the custom race wiring harness, and
installed a stock 800SS wiring harness, coils, ignition, ECU, switch
assembly, and more. They just barely got it buttoned up before our
third on-track session.
The third session was the highlight of my day; I managed to get my
best lap down below 2:08; so I should be competitive for Moto-ST on
Sunday. George got his best time down below 2:14, even though he
missed session one entirely.
Session four was cancelled due to oil on the track. We prepped both
bikes for CCS tech inspection tomorrow morning, checked in and
registered for CCS, and then packed up and left the track.
Tomorrow: CCS practice and the CCS GT Lights race.

Otherwise have fun. Barring problems have fun anyway and ignore the

How fast are the *real* racers going? How many *real* racers are
blogging their
efforts to their vanity site or telling Uselessnet about it?
Keith Code made an observation about buddies who attended his
cornering classes.

| | | Re: Greetings From Daytona Beach, Florida Greetings,
Daytona Day Two....
Team rider Jeff Gochenour and his fiance Shelley arrived late
Thursday night.
Day two at Daytona was even more frenetic than day 1. Arriving at
the racetrack at 6:35 AM, we were the first into the garage when,
wonder of wonder, the gatekeepers let us in early at 6:45. By 7:00 AM
we were first in line for CCS technical inspection. Both bikes passed
without incident, and we were ready for our first practice session of
the morning.
After practice, in which I was fourth fastest and George was 10th
fastest in our group, we changed the gearing on the "A" bike; I wasn't
pulling sixth on the banking or the main straight.
In the second practice, we both went faster, but unfortunately, so
did everyone else, and we ended up sixth and eleventh fastest overall.
During the lunch break, we went to register for Moto-ST on Suday,
and discovered that we would not be permitted to ride unless we were
upgraded to expert licenses by 4PM today. Unfortunately, our GT
Lights race was not scheduled to start until 3:30PM and it was a 25
minute race!
Donnie Unger took George and I to visit Keven Elliot, CCS Director
of Operations, and after explaining our situation, Keven wrote a
letter to Moto-ST certifying that both of us were eligible to be re-
licensed as Experts, and that, in fact, our credentials were in
process of being upgraded. We took those letters BACK to Moto-ST and
got registered and had our final rider list accepted.
After lunch, George sat out the GT Lights race and I ran in it,
finishing eighth after running off track on the third to the last lap
and having four of the riders I had laboriously passed repass me. I
was able to get two of them back, but two of them stayed in front of
me. Sucked, too, because I would've finished sixth if I had stayed in
front of them!
Anyway, got my times down to the 2:06 flat range, which is at least
as fast as the slower Moto-ST racers at Daytona last year, so
hopefully I won't embarrass myself out there.
After the race, we took the "A" bike through Moto-ST tech
inspection, and found that it was TWO pounds under the race minimum
and the fuel capacity is about 2/10's of a gallon ABOVE the race
maximum! Donnie is feverishly working to correct these items while I
type this.
Tomorrow, LW Superbike for George and I, and Jeff has ASRA Pro
Thunderbike. (Jeff is already running sub 2:00 minute laps on his
Buell.) We will also have to have the "A" bike dyno-tested and see if
was are OVER the race maximum.
The fun continues!
Tim
P.S. Thanks for all the good wishes, no time to respond to individual
messages, we have to be out of the compound in 20 minutes!
P.P.S. Krusty, thanks for remaining the guy who everyone loves to
hate! |

Last time I ran Cherahola with mama we stopped on the way up the
mountain at an overlook with a couple of picnic tables. It was during
the week and hardly anyone was out so each of us took a table for an
afternoon nap.
Shortly thereafter a couple of guys riding Goldwings rode up and
stopped. The walked back in the woods to piss over the cliff. One of
them was running his mouth non-stop. Then he had to come out and start
babbling to me.
I could see the chance of me getting anymore sleep was slim, so I
gathered up mama and we got on the bike. They got on their's first
after the loudmouth had made such a fuss over how sporty his Goldwing
was or some such nonsense.
I got on the chatty one's rear and it was driving me crazy. I could see
the quiet one pulling away, while windbag hugging the center line in
every turn and running WFO at every straight away opening.
I finally got around turbo-teeth and caught up to his quiet buddy who
did ride very well. We enjoyed a nice 50 mile ride at his pace which
was just about perfect after an all you can eat fried perch lunch.
At the end of the road he pulled off to wait for his buddy. I hope he
brought a book...
O yeah, and good luck to Tantrum Tim! |

Me too.
And had Krusty ever raced, he'd know that in most racing classes only about
1% of the guys on the bikes out there on the track are *real* racers in the
sense that they do it for a living.
Meanwhile, my thanks to Tim for mentioning the blood-pressure raising stuff
that seemingly occurs before every race: tech inspection problems, licensing
screw-ups, and mechanical hiccups that leave you wondering why you ever
decided to do this stuff in the first place. Unlike the magazine fluff
pieces, his posts are showing those of us on the newsgroup who've never done
it what racing is really like: I.E. about 90% frustration and 10% ecstasy. |

Good one Bruce...but I still like Guzzi's and old wings better. Either

To even run at Daytona gives you some bragging rights :-)

So throw some marbles in the tank and some lead under the engine. Lot
easier going that way than the other.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know how things are going. I
know it can get pretty hecktick down there. And even when there is a
lull there are so many other things you could be doing.

Get real. Lots of local racers have been to Daytona, but they didn't
try to play
"Big Halsey" on us. |

And you personally have raced on the Daytona banking how many times?
When you say "Lots of local racers" you have already thined things
down a lot. What percentage of the population do you think actually
race motorcycles? Not track days but really racing? And I would
guess that less than 1 in 20 of the racers around here ever makes it
down to race at Daytona. So yes, I was being real when I said that
just racing at Daytona give you one some bragging rights.
