| | | How Come No 2007 or 2008 Katanas on Suzuki's Website? Did they stop making them? Or just too many 2006 models around? Or they
don't update the model years always?
Thanks.

If you want a 600 Kan-O-Tuna, look on www.craigslist.com
I suppose the real reason for ending the 20- year long production run
of the carbureted Katanas with their oil/air cooling system was to
meet tighter 2008 air pollution standards.
The new water-cooled, fuel-injected 2008 GSX650FK8 can meet clean air
standards, but has a completely different cylinder block with the
camshaft drive chain on the end instead of in the the center of the
block as in the original GSXR750 "SACS" engine.
The cylinder block has the typical Suzuki electrochemically-deposited
surface and cannot be rebored if it is damaged.
The simpler screw adjusters of the older SACS engine will be missed. I
only had to check them once every 10K miles.
I would rather have the simpler constant vacuum carburetors with their
need for occasional cleaning than have a complicated fuel injection
system with its own brain. http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products...s/Default.aspx |

From what I'm hearing SV650S is better in every aspect.
Which that in mind and full fairing on 2008 why would anyone want or
need a Katana? |

Perhaps they want an I-4, but don't don't want a GSXR600 with better
suspension components?
Maybe they don't want the racetrack refugee GSXR750 or GSXR1000? |

Why would anyone possibly want an I-4 over a V twin? |

If the I-4 and the V-2 are of equal displacements, the I-4 will
usually be in a higher state of tune and will have more power. It will
out-accelerate the V-2, given enough straightaway.
This was demonstrated by Larry Pegram's race at Pocono a few years
ago. His Ducati was close to 1000cc's and his less well known
competitor was on a 750cc GSXR superbike.
Pegram had his hands full, trying to keep the 750 from passing him,
and the 750 rider had his own challenge, trying to find a way around
the slower Duc. |

Would the V-2 of the same displacement be considerably lighter though
or not necessarily so?
What's the top speed on SV650S if you don't duck and your gear
is anything, but aerodynamically correct? |

I suppose it would do at least 110 mph, but in 5th gear, not 6th

Ah, now you remind me of a sore point that annoys I-4 riders who have
to race against Ducatis which have both a weight and displacement
advantage according to the rules. They could weigh less than 325
pounds as I recall.
After the first season or so, AMA Ducati riders had to add 12 pounds
of ballast to their machines.
But V-twins still had the problem with souping up a large engine to
withstand the 180 gross horsepower that a 750 I-4 could produce.
The Suzuki TL1000R was a fat pig and so was the Honda RC51. |

You suppose absolutely wrong. Again. Every roadtest in the UK has pegged
it at around 130, and not in fifth either.

The OP's question was about the SV650S's top speed if the rider
doesn't get down on the gas tank. The bike is geared for 150 mph in
6th, and it's well-known that it will go 130.
Question is, will it do 130 if the rider doesn't get down? |

Oh, those poor things. I did not know you can safely carry a two year
old
on a bike.

Hmm, I have an acquaintance who can't get enough of that Suzuki.
Something must be terribly right about that bike.
The acquaintance is 190 lbs though and has no problem
with the pig wresting.
As for Honda, they seem to have no interest in the American
motorcycle market.
Did their moto market share drop as well in the last few years?
I don't suppose there is a homologated RC51 variant coming
to a dealership near me?
It makes me uncomfortable just looking at CBR1000RR.
How much of the I4 buzz ends up in the grips?
Is the pillion seat as needlessly uncomfortable
as it looks? |

No, it will not. At least my '01 SV650S will not, with me
sitting upright, or as upright as the normal posture on an
SV650S can be. A 130 mph top speed sounds about right when
leaned over the tank, but I've never managed to keep
accelerating quite that long, as a 100+ mph ticket is
in lose-your-license territory here.
FWIW, my 2001 SV650S final drive ratio was 15/44, the naked
model was 15/45. Not sure if this difference has persisted
through the later models.
