CNN) -- A court in Saudi Arabia increased the punishment for a
gang-rape victim after her lawyer won an appeal of the sentence for
the rapists, the lawyer told CNN.

The 19-year-old victim was sentenced last year to 90 lashes for
meeting with an unrelated male, a former friend from whom she was
retrieving photographs. The seven rapists, who abducted the pair and
raped both, received sentences ranging from 10 months to five years in
prison.

The victim's attorney, Abdulrahman al-Lahim, contested the rapists'
sentence, contending there is a fatwa, or edict under Islamic law,
that considers such crimes Hiraba (sinful violent crime) and the
punishment should be death.

"After a year, the preliminary court changed the punishment and made
it two to nine years for the defendants," al-Lahim said of the new
decision handed down Wednesday. "However, we were shocked that they
also changed the victim's sentence to be six months in prison and 200
lashes."

The judges more than doubled the punishment for the victim because of
"her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the
media," according to a source quoted by Arab News, an English-language
Middle Eastern daily newspaper.

Judge Saad al-Muhanna from the Qatif General Court also barred
al-Lahim from defending his client and revoked his law license,
al-Lahim said. The attorney has been ordered to attend a disciplinary
hearing at the Ministry of Justice next month.

Proof. Provide an example of a case in America where a woman

She wasn't punished for being raped, but for her transgessions of law
-- transgressions that also led to her being raped. The same thing
has happened here often enough in the past.

going, for many hundreds of thousands of years. It happens
constantly, and raising taxes isn't going to change it ( nor is

the winter. If not - well - we just discovered yet another food
source, didn't we ? You might want to tell Grandma to stop being such
a 'tough' old lady NOW .....

IOW - stop Western Civilization dead in its tracks right now,
and eliminate it. Now, sadly, 50 % - 75 % or more of the worlds
population will promptly die of starvation or cold in the ensuing
famines and shortages, but, hey ! You will have saved the people who

She broke the law, a law enforcing a local custom -- a custom that was
already old when the Prophet was young, for what it matters, and, a
law not common to all Muslim countries, or even to most of them.

And your chosen respons is to make an attack on Islam, rather than an
attack on the oppression of women in the particular country in

On the other hand, a thousand years ago, the climate was warmer than
it was during the twentieth century, or the nineteenth, or even the
eighteenth, But it appears that the twenty-first century is going to
be a lot warmer than that.

It might interest you to look up just how much of the worlds crops are
grown close to sea level, too. There are altoghether too many people
in the world -- a population that could never have been supported at
any historical period, and there is no eveidence that the present
population can be supported indefinitely by any technology either now
available, or likely to become available in the future.

If we let things go on as they have been for the last couple of
hundred years, all we can see is disaster, on a global scale. If we
choose to do things differently, we can, perhaps, see other outcomes.
Some people enjoy their absorbation in apocalyptic views enough that
they prefer continuing as they are. Others don't share those views.

it ? Do you see a distinction between '200 lashes with a whip plus 6
months in jail' vs 'no lashes and no jail time and no other punishment

BTW, on can certainly imagine situations where it is very
questionable whether a given sex act is rape or not. Certainly there
ARE cases where 'she was asking for it'. Example - girl gets drunk,
fucks some guy she met at a party. No date-rape drugs, just some
people getting drunk and horny. The next morning, she decides she was
'raped' because she wouldn't have done it sober. IMO, there was no
rape, if she CHOSE to drink and then CHOSE to fuck.

Yes - that women are chattel, owned by the male members of the
family. A MUSLIM law, a RELIGIOUS PRECEPT to them. Now, review the

most ill-prepared to meet challenges, living in the most undesirable

Case in point - Bangladesh today. 2,000 dead in the Big Storm
so far, expected to rise to 10,000. And this is simply routine yearly
news from there, not even an eyebrow-raiser. They can't support
what's there now, and yet they breed like rabbits, ensuring that next

But the answer does not lie in 'blaming rich countries', which
is just another word for 'penalize success', nor does it lie in
'taxing rich countries', which is just another word for 'reward
failure' and 'extend the death throes and misery'.

The answer also does not lie in ' make rich countries adopt
the living standards of Bangladesh or Zimbabwe ( where, I might add,
eveyone is now a millionare - sadly a bag of rice costs $ 14,000,000
Zmb-$ - true fact )'. Nor, back to the topic, does it lie in
restoring a Theocracy from the Dark Ages that is based in the complete
subjugation of the populace under laws that are considered cruel and

Well she won't be doing that again in a hurry, now will she!....or her
male friend.

Just goes to show how important it can be to obey the laws of the
land.....especially when they are that harsh! But some countries still
have the death penalty which is considered barbaric in certain civilised
countries.

If the penalty for speeding was pack rape, 6 months in jail and 200
lashes I'd be 10kmh under everywhere!....now that I think about it,
having sentences like that would really change the way ALL people
ride/drive!

Uh, no, the result in the US would be a huge number of dead traffic cops, as
the US population would promptly start packing heat and using it just as
soon as that red light came on.

And there are a *lot* more armed citizens than there are cops.

Good point. I suppose that explains a lot of the cop chases we see on
TV. Once the person knows what punishment they are facing, they take
whatever action possible to avoid it.....or put it off as long as
possible.?

Or try to get to a friendlier jurisdiction before surrendering,
ala Rodney King.

Having been a somewhat reluctant passenger in a car chase
one time, once it starts I doubt there's a lot of rational thought
going on in the driver's mind once the chase is really underway.

Probably true of the guys who are facing a likely life sentence for their
third serious felony conviction, but stats seem to show that a lot of of our
local chases are provided by gang-bangers who want to show off their "macho"
and get on the TV news by refusing to pull over.
