Default The Nanny State hits Granny's Cookies

http://michellemalkin.com/2007/12/26...d-a-bake-sale/

Don’t plan on picking up your Christmas cookies at the annual
church bake sale in Salem, MA this year. Why not?

The Salem government has banned them. That’s right: Banned all bake
sales. Too dangerous.

The local board of health has voted to ban all bakes sales by
churches, schools and senior centers unless they purchase city-issued
food permit. And all the food must be prepared in a city-licensed kitchen.

A town in Massachusetts–the land of government-authorized gay
marriage, sanctuary cities and voting rights for non-citizens–has
criminalized your grandmother’s oatmeal cookies.

The ban began with one overzealous and arrogantly self-important
town bureaucrat, Salem Health Agent Joanne Scott. She told the local
paper that “it’s her job to interpret the food code for the city and she
exempts only places serving baked goods within their own closed
community, not to the general public.”

In fact, Agent “007″ Scott is such a zealot that, when she heard
about a bake sale at a local senior center, she ordered them to either
comply with the proper government authorization–or shut down. Because
the Salem Senior Center doesn’t even HAVE a kitchen (supporters donated
cakes and cookies baked at home) the bake sale was cancelled. Many
schools and churches cancelled traditional holiday bake sales, too.

Apparently, AZ is just as wacky:

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepu...30fri2-30.html

Put down those illegal oatmeal cookies. Step away from those illicit
Rice Krispie treats. And drop your brownies.

Maricopa County health inspectors are scrutinizing homemade goodies at
local bake sales. Violators can be cited and fined hundreds of dollars.

Bake sales lasting two or more days require a permit as a "temporary
food establishment" and can only sell items made in a professional
kitchen. One-day sales can offer home-baked items but must display a
sign saying the food was prepared in a kitchen that isn't county-regulated.

All that for a bake sale, a part of traditional Americana just this side
of Mom and apple pie.

The whole notion is as nutty as a sheet of peanut brittle.

We've already been cheated out of food vendors on the street. So much for
private enterprise. A fully equipped restaurant and license must now
support each hot dog vendor. We have to go to Mexico to find taco vendors.
Vested interests of downtown merchants prevail once more. Next we'll have
Light Rail and hi-rise apartments/condos so the Phoenix 400 can continue to
rule.

And Joe Arpaio will throw their butts into the Tent City Jail.
"Prison makes you cry? Then don't sell the pie!"

The same thing happened up here to church bake sales; suddenly dozens
of elderly ladies became instant criminals for selling (wondrously good
home-made unavailable in stores) cakes and pies which they had been
baking for years.

BTW one thing that made New Orleans so interesting was that it was built
before modern building codes. By the time they rebuild it (if ever) and
conform to all the safety and sanitation and urban planning standards
etc it will be as sterile and antiseptic (and dull) as any other
engineered community.

My step-son sideswiped a van while riding a T-500. He crushed his knee
pretty badly, but luckily smashed the half bottle of whiskey in his front
pocket, which cleaned the open wound somewhat....
