Default New to Bikes

I am very, very new to bikes so my knowledge of them mostly comes
from, Wow look at that it looks cool. Anyways I was hoping someone
could give me some sites that can tell me everything I want to know
about bikes. Right now I am looking for sites that teach me what the
parts are and what they do, basically the technical aspects of a
motorcycle. So if anyone can help me I would appreciate it very much.

Well boy did you pick the RIGHT place to post! Between the chaps and
fringe and hair raising stories of how poor riding can get you, and
others, into deep doo-doo, this place ROCKS!

You found usenet, I think you can find GOOGLE or WIKIPEDIA.

But here is a quick lesson (assuming you mean motorsickles and not
bicycles):

They have 2 wheels and an engine (bicycles have pedals) and go VROOOOM
(bicycles don't).

Teh wimmens like 'em.

Go buy one (a motorsickle) so we can make fun of your choice. Hell, buy a
bicycle and we can make fun of it.

Some of us knoes everything but there's
a whole bunch of idiots who don't agree with
us and refuse to admit they're wrong.

Also, to work on your bike, you will need
at least one tool. This one really isn't intended
for use on motorcycles, so it's an excellent
first tool.

That should answer the, "Never used a wrench or screwdriver in my
life," type questions.

If you want to know something about a particular model or process,
just ask. Most will ridicule you but you may find the answer you
seek amidst the noise.

Bicycles do too go VROOOOM, when you use a wooden clothes peg to clamp
a playing card to a fork so it flaps in the spokes.

That applies to me also and I have been riding since Lyndon Johnson
said, "I shall not seek, and if nominated I shall not accept.."

> Anyways I was hoping someone

I am so-o-o-o tempted to post a smart-ass reply to this query, but shall
exercise restraint in consideration of the dignity of the newsgroup.

After all there was a era, back in the misty shades of the Dream Time
when I was was a toddler and knew nothing whatsoever about motorcycles
either, until the day some guy rode by on his Harley Davidson. I gazed
in awe at this wondrous machine that made such an authoritative, manly
sound, and resolved to myself that some day I'd have one of my own.

So now, about six US presidents and two near-impeachments later, I have
my own wondrous Harley Electra-Glide (in blue, no less) and I wave at
awestruck toddlers as I ride by and I can see the same resolve in their
eyes, and who knows, maybe some day they'll show up on this forum asking
for help about getting their first bike, and so you see, Simba,
the Great Circle of Life keeps rolling along...

Meanwhile, to Seeker Mavrik I say this: use Google, hang around bike
shops, take a riding course, gawk at the bikes (and the broads) in
bike magazines... seek persistently, and a Way will open...

Learn how to drive a manual transmission (if you don't already), then take
the MSF course.

Put-putting around on 250cc bikes for a couple days will teach you a bit.

<groan> ... Ravens are larger but also more timid around humans, so
Edgar Allen Poe's bird was probably a crow. However, "Quoth the Raven"
makes better poetry.

There are crows around here and I give them treats, such as gristle and
food abandoned in the fridge too long. There is one big bold crow that
I can almost feed by hand, and I have named him "Corvid". Corvid is
always the first to show up when I go outside with a plate or a plastic
bag of goodies and he perches on the house peak right above me while
I put it on the fence posts. Then he caws loudly to notify any other
crow within a 1 block radius and glides down to the fence.

One day a seagull showed up, saw the food, called out in Gull and
soon there were four of them aggressively flying circles all around
the neighborhood just like the US Air Force on combat air patrol.

The crows were outclassed, so they had to lie low and wait until
the gulls left.

A friend of mine puts food out for the birds. Sometimes the neighborhood
falcon will attack them while they are eating. Leaves a real mess.

I hate that caw at 5 in the morning when I'm trying to sleep!
Used to have a pet crow that was learning to talk. Turned him loose and he
still hung around for quite a while. Also too smart for his own good.
Would torment the neighbor by perching his sandy feet on the guys new

heh. Crows are bad, but occasionally, a local flock of parrots will
show up. Man, you want an obnoxious squawk? Reminds me of my buddie's
ex-girlfriend. But at least they are pretty to look at. Gulls are just
loud sky rats. Sorta like Joan Rivers.
