Default Ominous chirping sound from my S40

Lately my S40 (aka LS650 belt-drive Savage) has developed a chirping
sound which seems to be coming from the rear wheel. It starts about
40 kph (25 mph) and is worst (ie, loudest) at about about 55 kph.
Above 60 kph it seems to diminish.

The noise is somewhere between a chirp and a scrape and it sounds
awful unnatural, as if something is wearing itself to pieces.
It happens only when there's power to the rear wheel. If I pull in
the clutch and coast the sound stops.

I've examined the drive belt and the rear sprocket teeth and found
nothing unusual.

Any ideas what's going on, or what I can do to find out?

About two years ago, you complained about a similar noise and it
seemed to come from a heat shield on the exhaust pipe. Maybe that is
the source of your noise?

Did you look at the tire? Have you adjust the belt tension lately or
taken the rear wheel off for any purpose? Sounds like the tire is
rubbing on something?

I have a similar noise.
It's most likely coming, in my case, from a cracked exhaust mount (a V&H
part).
Singles vibrate, things crack.
Check mounts for cracks.

Simple test, remove the belt cover. I had one and the cover would
occasionly rub teh rear pulley without making noise. I could be wrong
and the exhaust mounts are worth looking into. I've also seen at least
one LS650 exhaust that had a chirp. A chirp that was none mount
related.

Thanx for the suggestions everyone. I should have said:

(1) it chirps at 50 kph under acceleration

(2) if I then disengage the clutch and release the throttle
the chirping stops

(3) if I'm coasting at 50 kph with the clutch disengaged
and rev up the motor there's no chirping

It seems to me that (2) and (3) make it more likely to be
a drive train issue than exhaust.

Well I can hear the sound clearly when I'm riding but the trick
is finding the culprit when the bike's up on the hoist.

Remember, not all crack is bad.

Wild idea: My S15 (GZ250) sometimes chirps under moderate-heavy load and
I'm pretty sure it is coming from the air box.......ie. big suck! ;-)

Are sure it isn't the weight of the rider causing the clutch to make
that sound? <ducks and runs><SERPINTINE! SERPINTINE!

Crack is bad , crevice is good ... the OP might want to check his drive
belt , they have been known to make funny noises when alignment and tension
aren't right .

Well, well!! I have just the same sort of sound on my 2004 LS650. Like
yours it goes away with the clutch lever pulled in, & happens on
acceleration. What is it? Mine only has 4000 mls on the clock. Im
thinking the belt could be responsible but as Ive not had it long Im
yet to get familiar.
The hoist is your first answer. Any info regarding correct belt
tension from readers would be gratefully recieved.
