Default OT - Plumbing woes

So, I get back from the grocery store, thinking I'll hop on the bike and
head to the local Harley dealer for their annual demo day and try out a
Sportster.

But I notice water bubbling out of the main sprinkler shut off valve. So I
think I'd better just shut it off. Bad move, now the water is gushing out.

So here I wait for the plumber to arrive, no test rides for me.

If it is the main line to the house, I'll be out $3 grand. Damn old house
built in 1947!

I had one day off in the last 7. That day was the day my basement flooded.

A line from my booster pump to the pressure switch blew off and was squirting
water against the wall for *days* before it was noticed. We don't go to the
basement every day, so it could have been running for 3 days or so.

I have thrown away a 16' trailer load of boxes, wet books, and assorted
waterlogged things. I had three bags of quick-crete. Now I have three really
big bricks.

OTOH, the floor is really clean now.

I ordered 7 Noah's Ark water alarms from Amazon.com, I'm not going through this
again.

My stepson mowed the campground about a month ago, on Thursday. He ran over one
of the outdoor faucets and broke it off. Didn't tell anybody. Fast forward to
Saturday when a guest called to report a geyser. More than 2,000 gallons down
the drain.

He no longer lives here.

Every cloud, and all that.

A 60 year old house is OLD? Fuck me rigid.

Maybe building houses out of proper materials wouldn't be a bad idea.

The population in my home town has more than quintupled in 60 years.
That means ~80% of all houses are less than 60 years old.

>Maybe building houses out of proper materials wouldn't be a bad idea.

Every year construction gets cheaper and cheaper, that's materials and
methods, not costs. Standard American houses are post & beam with
studs 16" on center. Old growth lumber is giving way to rapid growth
poorer quality Douglas fir or pine. Beams are now composite glued
laminates, basically chipboard. Much of modern housing is a tract
built by a developer. A tract may have 2 or 3 floorplans, each can be
flipped for a mirror image. It's an assemblyline production. Cut &
fill grading to level the landscape. Teams of foundation guys,
framers, roofers, drywallers, cabinet/finish carpenters, painters,
etc. It's amazing to see how fast they can build a mass of houses.
Like every industry, it's all about economic efficiency.

Of course, you can still get quality construction in America, it just
costs a mint, that's all.

No, ballon or platform. The side walls are the support. In P
& B construction, you can strip the side walls out and not change the
support of the building.

Especially considering how much the carpenter they hired from
Mexico has had to drink that day :-)

Yeah. As soon as I sent it, I realized it. Around here, it's almost
all platform. I just went through a house my buddy is building that's
p&b.

My house is solid brick no framing, all the walls are plaster and lathe. It
has no hope of surving a major earthquake.

Hear dat. You'd a thunk he would have told you. I'm sure all
would have been ( comparatively ) well.

BTW, I suspect your water loss was more like 20,000 gal, not
2,000 ( looking at the hourly / GPM rate )

I don't remember the gallons, but the water bill was about $120 higher that
month.

What really frosted me, there was a cutoff valve about 6 feet away that would
have killed that leak. He just couldn't be bothered to turn it off.
