leaders telling people they can break secular laws, and a moral

Interesting story took place earlier this year in Iowa, where the
biggest illegal immigrant raid ever took place.

ICE raided a kosher meat packing plant and arrested 390 Guatemalans
working illegally and in bad conditions.

Now Jews are angry about the mistreatment and low wages paid to the
Guatemalans, and are telling other Jews not to buy kosher meat from
that company, but the Jews aren't much concerned about the Guatemalans
being illegal aliens...�

It seems that there are two verses in the OT that tell Jews not to
mistreat impoverished servants, whether they be relatives or
"sojourners".

Modern Jews make a big deal every Passover about not "vexing a
stranger, for we were strangers in Egypt."

And they try to apply *that* logic to illegal immigrants. The problem
is, that verse applies to sojourners who are just passing through, and
the custom was that the Israelites shouldn't hassle travellers, but
share water and food with them until they continued on their journey.

Despite the fact, of course, that there are numerous statements
in the Mosaic books which make it clear that the law Moses
is giving is very often going to be in stark contrast to the
accepted practices of neighboring societies. Note, for instance,
Leviticus 18:3 (here in the KJV):

"After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt,
shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan,
whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk

with the priestesses of Ishtar and homosexual acts among the less

These acts took place in groves of trees, which are referred to even
1000 years later, during the time of king Solomon.

Capitalism with only interest free loans and credit ?

Seems like Christians, Jews and Muslims have all pronounced
interest evil at one time or another and then had to work their
asses off to make theological end runs around the problem.

I'm not really up on Islamic finance, but it seems as if you've
either got to do some religious tap dancing or abandon
modern economics.

Personally, I kind of appreciate having mortgages and
car loans available if I want them. Anybody think we should
outlaw these evil practices ?

That probably worked in the Middle Ages, when the king could loan the
treasure from some war to his nobles who had sworn oaths of
alliegiance to him.

Under the feudal system, the king could take his nobles lands and
wealth away at the slightest hint of "treason".

Not hardly likely. The king generally needed his nobles.
loyalty. Feudalism seems to have run mostly like a glorified
mafia with gaudier costumes. The territories of an underboss
were not taken away lightly.

Why do you think they invited the Jews and offered
various protections ? The Jews brought with them money
and commerce, both of which were obviously desirable.
Since usury was a sin, best to let the Jews do it since
they were damned already.

On the death of a Jew, his property was frequently
confiscated by the crown who would then dole back
a portion of it to his heirs.

Jews could travel internationally and they had a close-knit community
of Jewish aristocrats who traded with Christians and Muslims. This
system worked very well in Spain before 1492...

Jewish commercial travellers in eastern Europe were required to wear a
*red* Star of David to identify them as merchants instead of thieves.

The serfs were not allowed to travel at all, but were likely to attack
strangers who didn't have guards or some sort of visible badge on
their clothing.

Also, it was believed that there was nothing wrong with borrowing
money from a Jewish money lender and not repaying it.

That still seems to be in effect during the current credit crisis...

(1) The Star of David was a pattern of bars on a shield. Rothschild
means "red shield" but baron Rothschild preferred the light blue used
on the current Israeli flag when he designed it a century ago.
