Indeed. Proof -were any needed- that real banjo players seldom look
anything like the kid from "Deliverance", and are oft-times serious
musicians.

Me? I personally hold the all-time record for having outraged the most
traditional musicians in the same place at the same time by winning
the Topanga Banjo & Fiddle Contest several years ago with a jazz
version of "Old Man River" played in oldtime style.

They actually changed the rules the year after that: contestants are
no longer allowed to play non-traditional material. (Can't have people
doing anything *new*, you know! What would the neighbors think? Good
gracious!) ;->
