Default "Ride To Eat" website

Just wanted to pass along a website I have been working on, http://ridetoeat.com.
It's a comprehensive list of places it's worth riding to for a
memorable experience.

It has lots of data, but it is FAR from complete. It depends on
riders to add the places it is missing.

It also has a calendar for upcoming RTE events. If you have an
upcoming RTE event and you want it known, just add it!

Feedback welcome. Right now the data is "flat" (geekspeak), but in
the future it will be database driven and easy to sort and filter.

If you think it is worthwhile, please pass the word around in other
forums, blogs and such.

I've had "Ride to Eat, Eat to Ride" painted on every helmet for the
last 14 years.

Lately, I've been using my iPhone and an application named
Urbanspoon to find decent food. It has been quite helpful.

I'll take a look at your site when I'm traveling.

I don't know how the food is but Ole's Big Game Steakhouse is a bit
unusual. It's in Paxton, NE, just north of I-80.
Ole was a big game hunter. The bar is full of critters he shot. The
first thing by the door was a polar bear in a glass case.

Good Lord, your table on the main page is terrible to navigate!

Cool idea, but your design needs improvement. Don't give up!

The whole town of Walburg must've posed for the pictures. Paxton is
probably three times as large. More pictures here if you're interested:

Yeah, it sucks. Fancy html table presentation (sort, filter, fixed
header, etc.) supported across all the major browser platforms is not
yet a reality. I have been playing with some active datagrid stuff,
but this is very much a back-burner project for me. It will get
better. And I won't be giving up.

Thanks for the feedback. Negative feedback is as welcome as positive,
and is actually more useful.

No kidding. The layout is virtually useless. Besides the fact that
most of the places in my hometown that you list are mediocre or worse,
how is a person supposed to use the list? You have it separated by
state, then restaurant name. If you were to use it, wouldn't you want
it sorted by location, meaning state, city or region, then type off
food, or any of a bunch of qualifiers, THEN lastly, by name? And if
you're halfway down the list, how can you tell what any column is
about? And to see a column that is virtually a short story told one
word at a time? C'mon now. It may be a work in progress, but you need
to do a lot of work before it's even worth critiquing the restaurant
choices.

Fortunately we have a 100% money back refund if you are dissatisfied
for any reason. And if you need me to block your IP so you don't
accidentally stray into ridetoeat.com again, just let me know

Though, I gotta say, if you are unhappy about things in your life,
please take it out on someone more directly related to the cause. Or
maybe you just need more roughage in your diet. Perhaps I should spin
off a "Vegetarian Ride To Eat" site

As for the restaurant choices, I seeded the list originally from a few
publicly available lists. Those are the ones that have no rating. I
couldn't really start out with an empty list. I am completely willing
to strike any of those off the list if someone things they deserve
it. That already happens from time to time. Once the list grows
larger, I'll probably start striking them off anyway. The restaurant
industry has a large turnover, so at any given point in time some
small percentage of the listed restaurants aren't even in business any
longer.

As for the ones that have a rating, those are OPINIONS contributed by
the anonymous community of riders, not some comprehensive consumer-
reports style analysis. It is the nature of the beast that some will
have different opinions.

I'm happy to add other opinions, but I guess they will come from folks
with the ability to withstand the rigors of a less than perfect
interface.

"folks with the ability to withstand the rigors of a less than

Why do you seem to want your site to fail? People flock to easy to
use web sites (advrider, twitter, facebook, google, reddit, etc).

After one visit to your site they will never come back. You really
need to fix that table, you may need much more than just html.
Probably some java script like jquery and a backend like mySQL. Maybe
even rewrite the whole thing in PHP.

You've got a good idea that could be a lot of fun, but you'll really
shouldn't get in a pissing match with potential visitors. Using a
website should not require any "rigor".

It's just a website. It's not a business, a way of life, or the
center of my universe. It was just something I am playing around with
to help familiarize myself with some tools.

It is much better than it was when it started, and not nearly as good
as it will be later.

I just mentioned it here in case some find it useful. Others have.
Anybody who doesn't find it useful is welcome to either ignore it or
check back later to see if the format has evolved in a way that is
more palatable to them.

I welcome constructive criticism, but rude bastages can look forward
to getting as well as they give.

Geez. And here I thought I was giving constructive criticism. There
were at least 3 points in my post that were objective comments about
how the page was designed. I'd love to see a usable page of good food
places on the road. Yours could be it, but not in the shape it's in
now.
Let us know when you've improved the format.

From your overly defensive replies, I don't believe you really

Fuck off. Nice. There are always a tiny percentage of self important

Dude. It's a wordpress site, with an off-the-shelf freebie theme.
Whatever a Clagnut is and whomever was caught up in its steely jaws,
your quest to rescue them will have to take you farther than me.

If one of the pages is presenting an error when browsed, fine - I'll
look into it. But otherwise, I'm certainly not going to spend time
trying to rewrite wordpress.

Really glad I shared the site with you all though :/

1) With all due respect, even you use the spreadsheet by state, as
that's the way you sorted it if I remember correctly. Make that your
first column. Progressing to greater detail would suggest making city
second.

2) You might consider changing ST to ST/PR so as not to offend our
Canadian friends.

3) You might consider replacing the last column with REVIEW, or
something like that, and have a link in that column that shoots a
person farther down the page below the spreadsheet. That way you can
have a full paragraph talking about the place instead of being limited
to the spreadsheet width.

4) I noticed your last column got cut off. Perhaps you didn't take
into account the vertical scroll bar.

Robert:

The data is hard coded in an html table (I know... I know...), first
having been sorted by State then Restaurant name. I certainly could
sort it by City instead. So you're saying that makes more logical
sense? It's easy enough for me to change. Because the city name
doesn't really tell you much, unless it's a big recognizable city, I
went with restaurant, hoping that someone who really wanted to know
what was in a particular area would use the map, which works pretty
well.

Though believe me I understood well before I came to rec.motorcycles
that the data belongs in a database and should be served dynamically
with robust sorting and filtering options. I'll get it there.

I'm getting the feeling that the data isn't being served to you with a
left/right scrollbar at the bottom. Is that the case?

OMFG, I hereby apologize to you and others who responded as to how
messed up the format is.

I only look at it using Firefox. I just now tried it with IE (which I
normally avoid like the plague) and it is TOTALLY SCREWED. I have no
idea how many other browsers show it so f'd up. All of the columns
are the same narrow width, and there is no horizontal scroll bar.

I will try to figure out why this is happening and what I can do about
it, but clearly those of you who tried to explain that it was so bad
were correct. Sorry, I thought we were looking at the same thing. If
you can get a look at it with Firefox you will see why I thought you
were overstating the case.

In the meantime, if there is anyone who knows of such things who can
give me a clue why http://ridetoeat.com/rtetable.php (presented
without any of the wordpress or theme noise) looks ok in Firefox but
ridiculous in IE, I will be grateful. Feel free to respond offlist, I
don't think we need to turn this into a CSS thread.

Steve?

Everything turns to shit in rec.motorcycles eventually. It's like one of
nature's laws or something. :-)

I was thinking that if I wanted to find a place to eat that I'd want
to focus on those near me. I might not be familiar with any of the
names if I didn't live in the city that has the restaurant, so the
name might not become important till I've first decided what and where
I wanted to eat. Grouping by state, then city, would leave me with
restaurants in my location of interest. There's no perfect way,
though. What comes third is more subjective; name, type of food,
cost of food, quality of food, are all features that would be ranked
differently in importance by different people. The Yellow Pages first
groups by name, but then has a section where they are re-sorted by
food type. I'd guess column number three should be one or the other.
One person might be looking for a place based upon cost, another based
upon food type, but another might be looking for the best quality. I
vote for food type as number three.

Providing sort features would be great. There's a lot to learn, no
doubt. I've used Microsoft Publisher to make some web pages, but
decided to abuse myself this past winter and use Notepad to create a
site. It was a good exercise, but I got a bit saturated.

Yup. I've learned IE isn't totally html (or xhtml in your case I
think) compliant. I had to employ some trick in my own page to fool IE
into displaying properly. Don't be surprised if your problem is
actually IE's problem.

Second try at this post... the first didn't seem to "take", apologies
if it is a dupe

Anyways, with a repeat of my apology to those who tried to point out
how bad the interface was - when I didn't understand it was basically
broken via Internet Explorer, I can announce that I think that is
fixed.

It still is a "flat" dataset and really needs to be livened up with
dynamic sorting and filtering, and that is coming, but for now at
least it should be readable.

I'm headed to Indy tomorrow for the MotoGP, so if anyone has any
useful feedback or choice insults for me I might not be able to
respond in a timely manner.
