| | | Speeding Ticket - NOT! Speeding lightly down Rock Creek Parkway in the heart of DC yesterday,
doing about 55mph in the 35mph zone. Definitely speeding, as was the
Honda Civic behind me. Saw the cop off the side of the road, standing
with his radar gun up. Too late to hit the brakes fast enough!
Cop points at me, waves me by.
Cop points at the Honda Civic, pulls him over.

The cop got brains: MC 800lbs tops.
Civic over 2800lbs -> potential for about 3.5x the damage.
Definitely bust the cage going at the same speed. |

I'll bet your presence was probably discussed in the
conversation between the Civic pilot and the Cop. |

Two thoughts.
1. The cop is a motorcyclist, too.
2. The cop knows that radaring a motorcycle in front of a car that his
unit will read the speed of the car instead of the bike, so he waves
bike on as he knows he can't prosecute.

Regarding my #1, years ago when I lived in PA, we had a friend, a BMW
rider, who was a state trooper. He told us he rarely stopped a
motorcyclist, unless the rider was doing something really stupid.
We also, at his invitation, used to test our speedometers against his
radar unit. In fact, he bought his R100RS after pulling me over on the
PA Turnpike one morning, but just because he hadn't seen one close up
yet. We chatted about a half-hour, and he bought one just like mine a
couple weeks later.

I tried that defense once in Virginia, and it didn't sell.

On the other hand, the California Highway Patrol have roving task forces of
motorcycle officers that will sometimes target bikers in particular; the
Angeles Crest Highway being one of their favorite haunts. The idea is to
give ever single biker they can find either a moving or equipment violation
in hopes that the word will spread and the bikers will stay away.
So far it hasn't worked, but they're still at it like the industrious little
beavers they are. |

Especially since hand held units are usually laser these days and they
can pin point any vehicle they want.
My defence, if I was the car, would be selective enforcement since I
would have been "going with the flow" and other vehicles doing the
same speed were allowed to continue.

I take it you would be persuaded that the Judge needed a
little chuckle prior to announcing your guilty verdict ?

Or maybe the officer realized that Justin was speeding only to get away from
the murderous, tail gating cager. :-)

That depends on the charge--if he hit the cager for tailgating and
just happened to notice that he was speeding at the time then
"selective enforcement" wouldn't stick. In any case, "selective
enforcement" is going to be a bitch to prove in court.

That was my thought. Gotta keep that separation......front AND back!!
Any decent lawyer (is there such a thing?) will tell you that selective
enforcement is not a defense for anything........traffic offenses or
anything else. The issue at hand is whether or not YOU are guilty of the
charge; what anybody else was doing is immaterial. |

Now that you mentioned it I just run into one of those fucks in bmw
3xx
last night. The prick followed me for miles. He'd get on my ass,
I'd downshift into 3rd and blow out to the tail of the next cage puck,
later on that fuck would surface and stay on my ass again.
Lather rinse repeat. Can't kill the son of a bitch since there were
a ton of witnesses. Someone else will have a better luck putting
him out of his misery.
> That was my thought. Gotta keep that separation......front AND back!!

Front separation is obviously easy to control, the separation back
is problematic due to an occasional sticky sob that just won't get
the message or is insistent on delivering his. Which I suppose is:
I can endanger you as long as I would like and there is not a fucking
thing you can do cause there are witnesses all over. |

When people tailgate me, I tend to slow down to the point their
following distance is safe. If that means a crawl, so be it.

Doesn't work with someone who is determined to stay on your tail no
matter what. For those, I try to trick them into passing me. I
like to have the threat in front of me rather than behind, that way,
I can more easily control the separation.

Good idea. Nothing like fooling a moron into thinking he outsmarted you. Then
he can crash into another cager.
