Default Economical bike for a tall person

As pretty much all of my trips are now commuting I'm getting fed up of
paying for 20 littes of fuel to cover 150 miles. Expensive.

So I am looking at either buying another, more wallet friendly bike or
getting rid of my Triumph Tiger 955i and just using said replacement.
So there will be an '04 Tiger for sale soon.

Do we have a collective idea on what a reasonable reliable bike 1)
would be and 2) how much it cost?

Thankyee,

Did you change the front sprocket to a 19 tooth to drop the revs ?

This helps the fuel economy, not much, but it mounts up.

I bought my 28 year old GS650 for hardly any cash and that averages
50-60mpg and doesn't need silly things like chains either, it's also a
real hoot at anything over 90mph as (I'm sure I've said before) the
frame could be made from liquorice and the brakes from wooden blocks and
dustbin lids.

1) CG125 2) Not very much.

HTH

And if a 125 isn't "big enough" then you're not nearly as driven by
the petrol price as you make out.

A good BMW R1100GS/1150GS should give you better mileage and is probably
going to be the right size for you.

He could go for a Varadero XL125 if he wants something a bit more
Tiger-ish with more weather protection than a CG125.

It depends on his commute really - if it's A-roads and town then a 125
is OK but motorways could be quite dicey.

When I said 'big enough' I meant my physical size, not engine size.
I'm 6'6" tall with a bad back so being hunched over a CG125 isn't my
idea of fun.

I know.

Fussy. There's absolutely no reason a 125, perhaps the XLV125
mentioned elsewhere, shouldn't be physically large enough. If
cost/fuel economy is really the prime rationale then you'd put up with
it.

The point I'm making, in a somewhat roundabaout way, is that although
you say you want "better" you don't give any idea of what's
acceptable, or how much better it needs to be for you.

In practise, how much cost saving do you need to make a new purchase
worthwhile?

If you're only getting 34mpg, either your Tiger's fucked or you're
ragging the arse off it. I get over 55mpg from my '03 when in
'commuting' mode.

Yep, I honestly can't see it would be worth selling your Tiger if fuel
economy is the motivating factor. Like Krusty, if you really are only
getting 34 mpg, or 150 miles per tank, my experience says something
must be amiss. I get 200 miles a tank from my Sprint 955, and although
I'm not a complete lunatic I certainly don't hang around on it.
Is money really that tight? My girlfriend has a YBR 125 - nothing like
my Sprint obviously but will proudly return about 80mpg. Is it worth
it?
I would have thought that if you downgrade to something like a ER-5 or
Bandit you will see very little in terms of improved fuel economy and
end up with a disappointing compromise bike.

TBH though Nick, when I've seen you riding anything you tend to be

As an owner of a "disappointing compromise bike" the big advantage is
that even if you rag it you still see better than 60 mpg. There's
certainly fun to be had.

Has the OP considered the new BMW F800GS? Traillie style so nice and
tall, but the economy is reputed to be very good.

What he said. New Yamaha Ténéré is worth a look, too, though it may be
a bit slow for you.

Although you've never seen me on a bike about the right size, which is
something akin to a Triumph Tiger 955i. A few weeks after I picked it
up I noticed that my awful back hadn't been quite as awful as I
remembered it, so it's an improvement.

We've had a similar conversation in UKRM about Tiger fuel economy
before on the 955i model and the 150-175 miles per tank range seemed
to be quite normal. My trips to work are generally done in 30-40
zones and are about five miles each way and generally in rush hours
where overtaking and filtering aren't always good options.

The rev counter rarely gets over 2.5krpm on these trips.

1) Deauville [1] and 2) Dunno, how are values holding up?

[1] I know, dull as ditch-water but for a reliable, reasonably dry,
economical commuter it really does take some beating. <dons flame-proof

My earlier 855 injected model (1999) managed 206 miles from full to very
empty. How it managed the last 5 miles I don't know. I have never had to
put that much petrol in since.

It's not normal - far from it. 240+ is normal, based on the several
hundred Tiger owners on the Yahoo groups I run/moderate. There's
something wrong with your bike - duff sensor or faulty tune at a guess
(assuming you'd notice if one of the dodgy tank connectors was cracked).

One of the tank connectors was cracked a few months ago to the point
where it was pissing fuel out of the side, Auntie Carole recovered it
to my local garage and they ordered a new one.

I count it as fill up time when the needle is very close to the
bottom, but the fuel light hasn't come on yet. When it's at that
level I generally get 19-20 litres of fuel in the 24 litre tank which
is about 7.5 miles per litre.

I'll let it run low and see how much I get out of it, it's due to be
filled up sometime this week.

It was a recall for several models.

I once managed to screw 220 miles out of my '04 Daytona tank by riding
like a gurl. The light had been on for about 20 miles when I filled up
IIRC, and I knew I could get 35 miles at least after the light came on,
because I did that too another time.

Buy a GSXR1000. It suits someone of 6 foot 3 and will do 160 miles on
14 litres.

Use a bicycle you lazy fucker. As you'll be able to filter using the
pavements and ignore red lights you'll probably reduce your commute time.

The thing that pisses me off about the tiger is the lying bastard of a
fuel gauge.

The needle drops like a stone after half full, and I panic and pull in
to fuel up as soon as it hits the red. I then have difficulty
squeezing 18 litres into my 24 litre tank :/
